Help with CAM Install
whats going on guys i installed a tr224 .563 112 last night. got done around 6 a.m. and tried to turn it over. (6 speed) i went to turn the car over and all my gauges worked fine i got oil pressure but the car would not hold its idle, the motor would just stop. my friend played with the throttle and got it to idle a with the rpms around 1500 and we noticed a really bad ticking noise on the driver side of the motor. we thought it was the rocker arms and i just checked them but they are all torqued down to 22ft lbs still. i think the ls6 intake is coming off next. do yall have any idea as to what we should look at or why my motor wont idle, is this normal for a 6 spd?
thanks for any help fellas

Are you one hundred percent certain that you got the cam gear and the crank gear dots lined up? Do you have valve springs that are up to the task of the cam? Double check all your spark plug wires, etc...

yah all that was done right. so i thought. i am using manley springs and tit. retainers that are good to .600 lift. i guess im gonna start taking the ls6 intake off and see if i missed something around that area.
thanks for the help though

I too had some clicking noise after I installed my cam. Although after letting it just idle for a while it went away. I have rechecked my rocker arms, and I know I am using some good springs too. I too have a M6. My cam is a 224/220 .581/.581 116lsa.

you will probably not hold good idle until you get some tuning done...might need to put a little bit bigger hole (or a second hole) in the throttlebody...cams different than stock..take more air to idle correctly...
I had to hold my foot on the gas till I could get tuned....
the noise is normal for just starting it up...mine was noisy as hell for about 15 minutes.....it takes it a little bit to settle down...
also go back and re-torque the rockers...sometimes you gotta spin it a few times and re-torque....
also...with my cam....I had to make idle up at 850....and it took some tuning and Idle air control adjustment to get it to hold idle....

Some extra ticking is normal with a cam such as the TR224. I ran the cam for one summer and just got used to the ticking. Excessive ticking is not normal though. When I ran the TR224 cam I did drill the throttlebody out one size bigger too. I never got it tuned and it ran fine, so if you cannot get it to idle after drilling the throttlebody bigger there may be a problem...especially with an M6. If it is idleing irradically, then you may have a vacuum leak somewhere.

The TR224 holds a great idle w/o tuning. Mine stays at 700 and has never died on me once. More ticking noises are normal, to an extent though. I'm thinking it may be a problem with a lifter, or you didn't line up the dots correctly, which is usually the case.

.
Unforunately, "ticking" is hard to diagnose. It could be just normal valvetrain noise from the larger cam, or it could be a somewhat serious problem such as the cam is not lined up properly.
Also, a cam such as a 224 / 112 should idle without dying on a stock tune in an m6. Although it usually wont be the prettiest idle, it should definately hold an idle without a tune or throttle body holes.
Just on a side note, I am not sure how long you let this run for, but extremely excessive valvetrain noise is normal during the first few seconds after startup as the lifters get pumped back up with oil.
