Default Main Stud Question. PLEASE help!

My friend is doing a turbo set up over winter. He has a forged ls1 with a stock crank.

Right now he has factory main bolts and the bottom end has around 4k miles on it. My question is, Can we pull the motor and swap out the factory main bolts for ARP main studs without having any problems? Will the motor need to be reballanced? Will it hurt the bearings to swap the bolts? Any help will be very appreciated.

Swapping out the main fasteners is a fairly straight forward job. You will not need to rebalance the engine and you can also check the tolerances of the bearings before adding the turbo. We also suggest installing ARP Connecting rod bolts along with the ARP Main Studs do to the extra stress boost can cause. The torque specs and sequences can be seen at the following links for the connecting rod bolts and main studs. Another good practice when installing main studs is to run a thread chase to make sure everything is clean and the new bolts are torque properly. Unfortunately we do not have a supplier that offers a thread cleaner but the size you will need to find is 10mm x 2.0

Thank you for the reply! when i change the bolts will i need to change the bearings as well? or will they be ok? They only have about 4k miles on them.

With that low of mileage your bearings should be fine to reuse. During the swap be sure to keep everything clean and check for any signs of wear.

No problem and good luck with your build. We would love to see some pictures when you get everything setup.

I would definetly not install studs without at least checking for an out of round condition on the main caps. Same for the rods. It's all apart anyway, might as well at least check! It's cheap insurance.
