A lot of people are reporting near 400 rwhp with just the cam alone. That's insane. To add onto that, it needs these valve springs: 12499224 which come stock in the LS6, LS2, LS3 engine. For someone on a budget, this is the perfect setup. The 243 heads that I'm getting is a full setup. My father will be replacing his old valve springs. Car has roughly 30,000 miles on it.
My 228R cammed car gained 50hp and has power everywhere. There was no loss of low end torque at all. I know everyone wants to hit 400 cam only but try not to get to caught up in the numbers. Dynos vary ALOT. The same car that made 370 on a mustang dyno could hit 400 on a dyno jet.

I came across a good buy for a 224r. Of the two cams, the 224r is spoken more highly of on here than the ASA.

EDIT: I have found the Comp Cams 918 Valve Spring & TSP Pushrod Kit for $269.99 on the Texas-Speed website. Any takes on this one?

Okay, so this is what I have in mind to get so far:

LS High Volume Oil Pump (17801830 ) $75.17
LS 1/2/6 Timing Chain ( 12586482 ) $36.48
224R Cam ( 25-224R )
Comp Cams 918 Valve Spring & TSP Pushrod Kit ( 25-918PKG ) $269.99
Comp Cam Spring Locator( 4705-16 ) $35.99
LS2 Lifter Guide Trays(x4) (12595365 ) $32.00
LS7 Lifters (12499225 ) $129.99
Centerbolt Valve Covers
243 Heads

What else should I look into getting? The equipment above is for a 243 head install, 224r cam install, ls7 lifter install, and oil pump install.

I'm guessing you are doing the labor all yourself. If you are just take your time and replace any gasket that you come across. Valve cover gasket, timing cover gasket, valley cover gasket, intake manifold gaskets, head gaskets, head bolts, assembly lube, crank pulley bolt, and while its off might as well throw an underdrive pulley on there.

Crap adds up quick doesn't it OP...trust me been there done that, but it's TOTALLY worth it

I would look at a tony mamo cam. 224/228 114+2. That should fit your needs.
