With valve contact that severe, either you shaved .100+" from the heads, or you installed the timing set one tooth off. Which do you think is more likely?

i bet its a tooth off. i would check that just for the peace of mind before firing it up again.

The engine will be pulled. Timing will be checked.

I shaved the heads enough to have a clean gasket surface, come to think about it... When it was torn down pre rebuild, there was freeze plugs that denoted heads had been off Before.

It definitely sounded like it had high compression, like amazed me. Granted the valves possible sticking could've added to this. Regardless, when I pull the heads apart to check the valves. I'm going to CC the heads, that will give some answers, or so I hope.
