If you:

1) want to be able to read the oil pressure in the instrument cluster
2) don't want a massive oil leak from that spot

Then yes sir, you need it.

I just pulled my crank pully off today and I used the Chrysler crank puller from autozone and it was the best and easiest for me, I tried the bigger jaw pullers with no luck this one is compact and beefy and took it off no problem at all

Is there a special technique .. I loosen the bolt and grabbed the pulley with jaws w/ the bolt still in but really loose . I was using the bolt to apply pressure to pull the pulley off

Some of the kits have a peculiar pushrod looking setup in them as well. It took me a while to figure out how to get it all together when I couldn't get the crank off my LM7 with the stock bolt. There's a little angled piece that fits into the opening where the bolt goes that a pushrod fits into, then the pulller pushes off of the pushrod. Sounds complicated, but if you have the right parts in your kit then you should be able to figure it out.

As mentioned earlier, the Harbor Freight works very well. I have Snap-On and OTC pullers that I use at work, but the HF piece I bought for home use works best!

Combine that with a cordless 1/2" impact and you can remove the bolt and pulley in less than a minute.

This!

This puller takes off newer GM, Chrysler and For balancers.

We chained my old block to the wall.....used my friends dually turbo diesel pick-up truck and a chain wrapped around the crank pulley.

Came off like it was greased with butter........easy.

^^^^thats a little easier than the way I did it.

I just chained the pulley to a boulder and then rolled it off a cliff roadrunner/ coyote style, never did find the old pulley...
