Regular 5w30. I didn't find the ZDDPlus until I started searching for a "bottle additive" of Zinc.

I have no idea what Castrol Edge actually contains, but it makes an EXTREMELY noticeable difference in valvetrain noise. Mark my words.

I really need to get on bobistheoilguy and do some detective work.

Good to know that you hear a difference, stick with Edge. My self I'm not big on additives , try to get zinc levels you want in the formulation of the oil itself. The problem with these new oils is the high detergent counter acts the zinc added, having a mute effect.

use the viscosity of oil that gives you 10psi oil pressure per 1000rpm. So that might be a 0-30W for a stoplight to stoplight car with redline shifts or that might mean 20-50 on the same car roadcourse racing where the engine gets really hot living near redline

10W30 Valvoline VR1 Conventional Racing Oil or Amsoil Z-Rod.

Both offer outstanding protection (both wear and cushion).

I use GC 0W-30 on my Nissan's VQ35DE. It was a good oil in the LS1 when it was stock. Good wear protection.

Every builder/company is different. Me personally I run 15W 50 Mobil 1. Its cheap, doesn't really burn with hard driving and IIRC is all LPE runs on what they build.

Where do you find the Z-Rod or VR1?! Do you order it online? I can't find it anywhere in Austin on the shelf!!

Amazon has VR1 $60 for 12 qts. You order Amsoil from them.

Oreillys, Autozone, Advance auto. I have been to and called all of them in my area. None of them have VR-1 or ZRod! And they told me that none of the stores nearby has it either!

I look at all these posts and I see all the different oils that people are using because of this and that additive. At a certain level more ZDDP is not going to help protect an engine. You can add it, if it makes you sleep better at night.

I also seen previous in this thread that somebody mentioned the sheering strength of the oil. That is the most important thing in oil to help prevent metal to metal contact and lubricate the best where there is metal to metal contact. (i.e. non-roller tip rockers).

Here is a link that might surprise you all in a test of the sheering of oils. #2 will surprise the crap out of you. Those of you running Rotella T6, you will be surprised to know it made 65th on the list. IMO, The Valvoline VR oils whether synthetic or conventional are the best. All these tests were done by an SAE engineer and were backed up by GM engineers.

ZDDP levels don't tell you anything. But you're right - the only oils to provide over 100,000 PSI of sheer protection are the VR1 oils. The Amsoil are right there at 95k from the tests I've seen. Even Brad Penn and Joe Gibbs oils aren't as high.

What surprised me the most was that alot of the conventionals were beating out the synthetics. Even some of the used oils beat the synthetics in this test.
