Would running Mobil 1 0W40 help shut up the good ol' LS1 slapping problem a bit? I'm using 5W30 and it's pretty noticable.

It might help a little bit, but to be totally honest, the piston slap problem in a lot of LS1s is too severe to be cured by a simple change of oils. It's more of a mechanical issue than anything else. I'm not sure why some engines get a lot of it while others see none though. My old LS1 was not a piston slapper or an oil burner at all.

Piston slap is caused by too much piston to cylinder wall clearance! Some enginines evidently were not prepped right from the facory or some core shift has occured causing the excessive clearance!

Sorry to bring back such a old thread,. but damn! I cant even begin to talk about how much of a difference the mobile 1 0w40, made over my crappy Royal purple 5w30 i was using.. It kinda helped with my Sewing machine valvetrain from the cam.. And i see a avg of 5-10 more oil psi over royal purple.. After reading Patman's thoughts about the 5w30 RP, i went right away and got this .. However i dont have the longer k&N Oil filter, still using the ls1 one... So people wondering if its better, Yes it is ..

Higher PSI doesn't mean more oil flow. It just means the oil is thicker. How is that an indicator of protection? I've always heard that but never heard an explanation.

+1, I have PM'ed this guy(Patman) several times and I will tell you right off he doesn't give a **** what brand he gives props to. He bases his recommendations on oil-analysis and personal experience. You will find his post-record on this site to be immaculate and complaint-free. Period.

While we're discussing oil use/condumption and the like I'm wondering, what do you folks with higher hp cars do for your PCV systems? Are we keeping it stock or upgrading for higher cylinder pressures? And if so, what kind of upgrades are we doing? I do notice a good bit of blue-ish smoke when my car is started ('02 LS1 in a '00 WS6, F13 and PRC heads) but I wasn't sure if its a heavy overlap issue on a cold motor or something esle. Ideas?

Yea mobile 1 isnt hard to find like other brands such as GC or Royal purple..

Ive found my mobile 1 0w40 in Kragen, Napa & Autozone stores...

N4CER; I dont really care if it doesnt mean oil flow, i just like a healthy oil psi guage, ya know ? ... With my mods,.. and still a stock ls1 oil pump and stock pcv.. the more oil pressure it shows the better i feel... Plus going off of Patman's Oil analysis. 0W40 does protect better than alot of oils out there. It might not be the best, but ya know im not guna drive 100 miles just to get some stupid gc, when mobile 1 is just as good.

Yeah I wasn't trying to bash you at all man. I agree and I also feel better if I see good oil pressure. I'm just tossing that info out to all that pressure does not equal protection. Something thick gives higher pressure, but might not get to all the areas that a lighter oil will. I don't know that it causes an issue, but think about this: if I have molasses in one cup, and water in another, and tip the cups over, what one will be swept away easier? Water. But once swept away, what one will go back to where it was? The thinner of the two.

Just a thought. I admit it may be totally off base, but it makes sense in my head. I might not be explaining it well.

on another post i was readin hear they mentioned rotella i think it was, by shell. I'm coming close to needing an oil change soon, and heard penzoil was **** due to it being a wax base and not ash. i'm pretty confused, but redline does seem to get mentioned quite often. i have a 99 TA with 22K miles, basically stock. what do you guys think?

I think that you mean parrafin. And that's supposed to be the conventional oil... not the synthetic. At least that's my understanding.

I think the price of lubrication manufacturing is getting to companies these days. It seems that Mobil may be using a Group III base stock for it Mobil 1 oils in recent times. Not sure why they would be doing this. http://theoildrop.server101.com/foru...gonew=1#UNREAD

Also, for those of you looking for AMSOIL click on the link in my sig and ALL proceeds from the sale goes to this website.

Many people on here can't change their plugs without 10 "HELP!!!!!!!!1!!1!" posts, so you might want to evaluate their input accordingly.
