Default Installing LS9 cam in LS1. Good or bad idea???

Hey guys,

I'm starting back on my twin turbo project for my 02 fbody and I ran into a snag. Long story short, I'm building a forged LS3 on the side but decided to throw the original 118k miles LS1 back in temporarily. Just until I get enough money to finish building the LS3 right. Besides, I'm new at FI so if I blow a engine I rather blow the LS1.

I want to prep the LS1 for boost without spending too much on it and what I've come up with is this:

LS9 cam
LS9 head gaskets
Port stock LS1 heads
re-gap piston rings for boost
Head studs
New timing chain

Here's my issue. I've read that a LS2 timing cover is reguired to use the LS9 cam BUT I've already welded my "oil return" AN fittings onto the LS1 timing cover (see pic below). Is there any way I can keep the stock LS1 cover with the LS9 cam? If so, please let me know. If not then I can only think of two choices:

1. Buy a LS2 timing cover, new AN fittings and weld them just like the LS1 cover.

OR

2. Buy a LS1 spec'd cam and forget about the LS2 timing cover, LS9 cam, etc, etc.

I'm thinking by going with a LS1 spec'd cam it might end up costing the same or cheaper and save time.

What do you guys think?

Isn't the cam position sensor on the front for LS9? Its on the back for LS1. That could pose an issue.

That I don't know. I just read that it can be done with a LS2 timing cover...so I'm assuming it's in the same place as the LS2

Just get a stock ls1 cam or ls6 cam to dick around with and keep your ls1 cover that you already welded.. The power is gonna be there no matter what..

^^^^Ya that's what I was thinking. Just look in the classifieds for a LS6 or F/I cam. I just wish there was a way around this. Oh well.

Thanks guys

Yes its a stock ls1 right? So you won't wanna push it too hard anyway. A 20-40$ stock ls1 cam will make the power you want.

500-550 would be a safe limit

Yup, it's a completely stock LS1 motor. I'll just keep the stock cam it has now and see how things go. I was hoping to upgrade the cam to help spool the big turbos. They're 67/64s so the 5.7 will need all the help it can get to spool them. I'm going to keep the power under 650 and keep the revs below 6k. Hopefully it will hold until the LS3 is done.

Just curious though...
How much difference will a LS9 cam make in RPM to spool a pair of 67/64 turbos with the LS1???

Just throw an LS6 cam in it and call it good.

^^^^ Ya but how much of a difference will it make in spool time? If it makes no noticeable difference I rather leave the stock LS1 cam in place since and save the money.

I wouldn't even bother with a LS9 cam like some others have stated.
