Best oil?

Stock engine? Street car? Any off the shelf oil will be fine. People run into oil issues when they try to go thousands of miles without changing it or try to run a street oil in a high performance race engine.
If I were you, I would put any known brand in it. I wouldn't even go synthetic unless that's what you have been running. Def DO NOT go thicker...Stick with whats recommended....5W-30

Thats the way i feel about it. I usually pick one and stick with it. Lots of guy like the valvoline vr1 oil and the german castrol 0w30. They have alot of threads on the subject. Before its over your going to hear of someone who runs the walmart super tech cheap stuff all the way to some real high dollar stuff. Just make sure to change it regular and you should be fine
Those chanting M1 and "stick with 5w-30 because it is what is recommended" are likely to be particularly ignorant on the subject. Not saying you have to run other than 5w-30 but if someone believes 5w-30 is best because that is what the cap says they are clueless.
Those who say German Castrol and Penzoil Platinum are likely aware of what a Used Oil Analysis is and have looked at them for THIS ENGINE

Take two brand new LS1 engines, run one with Wal-Mart Super tech and the other with VR1, Mobil 1 or what ever. Put them through the same rigorous street duty and see what happens. That would be a valid test real world test, not guesses based on what the ingredients are. Something tells me though they will both last over 150K+ miles without an oil related issue. Regular oil changes is more important than the oil. Show me a valid test that shows otherwise.

That will stir the pot....
What would you use? Oil that is shown to perform based on studies of actual application or just looking at the ingredient list?
I know every big name who markets oils will tell you "theirs" is the best...so who can you trust?

You seem to not know the difference between USED oil analysis and virgin oil analysis.
USED oil analysis will let you see wear metal content in the used oil.
Both can be had at AutoZone or Amazon.
Oh, I'm very familiar. You are indeed correct, but it is not indicative to the oil protection. You will always see metal content in used oil from the wear of components (That's the way it is). The increase of metal PPM, does not directly relate to how good the oil is (even though I will agree it can contribute). It is used to detect component failure and identify wear items. Even moderate levels of metals in the oil does not indicate failure. Like I said, you need a more scientific test to support the claims. There is none provided.
