Default How much difference in degreeing cam in car vs. on engine stand

I am going to re degree my cam that's in my car. I did it one the stand before I put the engine in the car. I'm going to check it again but now it's in the car. It's a long story don't ask.

Obviously I'm going to use light weight checker springs but I'm not pulling the heads off to use a solid lifter. Will the light weight spring be enough to compress the lifter?

I have a big Comp degree wheel and a small Mr Gasket wheel. I'm sure I've going to have to take my accessories off but which one have you used?

Thanks for any info on this.

J

I haven't done it yet. I would imagine you won't have any damn room unless you take the radiator and front fascia off.

I agree. I was going to pull the fan's/radiator out. I figured it would be a good idea to pull the plugs out too, I "think" that would help to keep the lifters from bleeding off.

Yeah, I wouldn't turn the crank with the spark plugs in there.

I did mine both ways and on the stand is far easier. Do you have the comp crank adapter? If you do the oil pump needs to come off or at least pull the cover and gear out of it for the adapter to mate with the oil pump drive. Also finding true tdc is more tedious with the head on. Probably going to use the small wheel too

you need the small degree wheel for in car degreeing. The big wheel is easier to use/read and woks best but usually you only have room for the big wheel when the motor is on the stand. Also as noted above the comp crank tool works best, you can use the stock crank bolt but it doesn't work as well as the crank snout tool.

I do have the comp crank tool, that thing is ****. I had not considered finding TDC yet. It's been a while since I've degreed a cam and hadn't gotten that far in my head yet. They sell a tool that threads in the spark plug hole don't they?

Yup. You can use a piston stop for sure. Like said above the smaller wheel is a pita to read accurately at times but it will work. If you have or make a really good setup you can degree right off the lifter itself instead of dealing with checker springs too

Good new is there is plenty of room to work once you get the radiator and fans out. I took the A/C and alt off but not sure I had too.

Bad news is the checker springs are too much for my lifters. So I wasted most of the afternoon. There is no way in hell I'm pulling a head off so dot to dot it is!

I had forgot the pump has to come off to put the comp crank socket on. I am not looking forward to having to put that back on. Since I did not have the fore thought of having to take the pump off that means I do not have a new O ring to put on.

Does a parts store sell just the o ring? My guess is no and I will have to get one from the General Monday.

Such is life. Maybe this will prevent someone else wasting an afternoon like I did.
