this post brings up some questions i have... first off at what point should you switch to solid lifters? 2, these big cams where do you get them from? 3, i have dual springs with my 224 what kind of springs and pushrods do you use with these bigger cams? and 4 what is the biggest cam you can go before having to notch your pistons...

1-someone can correct me if i'm off here, but solid lift cams are based on different lobes, so its not a lift issue in question. 2-comp, lunati, etc is where they are from. generally you need to find someone like a sponsor who can order custom cams. Just give some of the shops a call...futural is a good one 3- Dual springs will work. I will say that a dual spring with your 224 cam is an overkill unless you are really topping the .600 lift mark. 918's work just fine on my f1 591/569 230/226 112 cam. Dual springs are good to about a .650 lift max. I wouldn't go any higher than that without calling some of the manufacturers and getting info on installed height. 4- The answer to this question is based on the cam specs. duration and lift play a huge factor in this. Valve events affect the need to to this, and in relation of valve lift to TDC you will have to fly cut the pistons accordingly.

we just got our "street" project car up and running. it is using our stage II 5.3L heads and the cam is a 232/238 .574/.585 110LSA 108ICL. the lift is a little less than we would like but we shaved the heads .035 and we still had to shim the rocker arms .030 to eliminate the P to V clearance issue. the car has a SPEC stage 5 clutch and a Moser 12 bolt with 4.11's. as I say we just this afternoon got it running so no dyno or track numbers but this thing blows the tires off (28x12.5 ET streets) even from a roll in 3rd gear. Thing pulls like a ****

I'm interested in the specs on your 5.3's. What kind of compression are you running with them, and are they on the stock 3.90 bore? I've got a set i'm working on, and have been running the calcs to get the compression right around the 12:1 mark without going over too much.

Milled .035 brings the compression to about 11.8. using 2.02 and 1.57 valves and on the stock bore. heads are setup for N2O use. I don't have the flow numbers in front of me but I'll post them for ya once I round them up.

Cool...That will be helpful. The only diff. I see in comp is my bore size I'm using a 6.0 block and probably a .030 over one at that. I think i'm safe down to a 57cc combustion chamber size to get the compression i want.
