Default ls1 rebuild cam choice

rebuilding a 99 ls1 for my camaro which is a dd. Just wondering if its worth putting a ls6 cam in it or any cam? It will be tuned when its finished but i am not putting a different converter in it. any input is appreciated.

I would go for the Z06 cam and an ls6 intake. Why not if it's torn down.

seems like the most common thing to do. would the ls1 springs work with that cam? also whats the cost for the cam, i hear a new one from gm is around 115?

I dont think an ls6 cam will make that much difference. I would put in something like the TR224. It will be a noticeable difference and very friendly on the street. If you went this route you would have to upgrade springs for sure.

Yes, but I don't think there will be much to gain over the LS6 cam without a stall converter.

I picked up a 1998 WS6 Vert with #6 Rod Bearing spun, I'm doing the same thing complete stock rebuild with a Z06 Cam and LS6 intake and all the other bolt on's. Can't wait for it to get finished, I also debated on the 224 cam but cost wasn't worth it right now....

I say Do what ya got planned, it'll be a great DD

IMO, there's plenty of good cams between the LS6 and 224/224 114lsa, that would probably be a better choice.
It just depends on the intake, heads and exhaust configuration.

Comp Cams, EPS, Crane, Lunati, Cam Motion, there's over 20 cam that I would choose over the LS6, and would work better with the stock stall than the 224/224.

Before choosing consider your options.
1- Do you want a true DD that will last a long time? Choose lobes that will last, like the"Old Man Cam", I mean Hotcam

Hotcam would be a good choice. Works with the stock converter and LS6 valve springs.

Kit runs about $500 with the LS6 Springs and Cam from GM.

I wouldn't do a hotcam. It is a underachiever. We have a few we sell to the TBSS crowd that are in the mid 220's that work with a stock converter and even sound off a good bit. A tried and true 224/224 wouldn't be bad either.

500 bucks for a slightly better ls6 cam doesn't seem worth it

I agree that there are better options than the LS6 cam out there but as far as price is concerned you can't beat it. I just installed one in a buddy's car not too long ago with brand new LS6 springs for 200 bucks even. And it will work well with the stock torque converter.

With a Comp Cams #54-424-11(212/218 115lsa, lift .558"/.563") and a set of PAC 1218-16 valve springs your looking at $475, add some Manley LS Series Prs and you looking at $575 shipped.

Now if you want a slightly bigger cam then a Comp Cams#54-414-11(216/220 114lsa, lift .525"/.532") with the PAC 1218s for the same price.

Nice cam for DD. I used one back in 00, made good power till 6300 rpm. I used Comp 918s with it for over a year.
