I'm about to start my rebuild for the first time! But don't know what oil would be a good break in oil ..help me out guys

 

Joe Gibbs BR is good. Tho I think you could run Shell Rotella as well. Or even VR1 NSL since you'll be changing the oil pretty quickly.

 

I used Comp Cam for the initial start-up and Royal Purple break-in for the next 500 miles.

Any quality brand name break-in will suffice. Others will chime in with Brad Penn, Edelbrock etc...but all good stuff. Unless you buy it online, you may be limited to whats on the shelf.

Also consider how long you are going to run it. I chose Royal Purple because you can run it for up to 2,000 miles. I think some are meant for just a couple hundred if that before it starts breaking down.

 

Royal Purple or just some Castrol SYN. JMO!

 

Try to at least use a conventional oil for break in. "Break-in" oil is preferred.

 

Hmmm, GM ships the Corvettes with Mobil 1 5w-30. Must work pretty well for break in.

You can break in an engine with synthetic, but not the best way to do it. To ensure proper ring seal during break-in, conventional is highly recommended.

 

I just bought the Joe Gibbs BR30. I heard it was good. I also heard that a high zinc content is good for break in.

 

Most HDEO's will work since they contain more zinc then normal conventional oils. Rotella, delvac, delo, ect. Quite a bit cheaper than the "break-in" oils on the market as well.

 

Or You could buy conventional oil and add a qt. of Lucas .

 

I am using gibbs in everything now. br 30 followed up with ls30.

oil is far more important than what most people think with these engines. keeps the valvetrain happy.

Valvoline VR1 Racing 10W-30, the non-synth stuff. Plenty of zinc/phosphorous and very high film strength. NAPA can usually order it if they don't have it on the shelf.

 

PART #'S for Synthetic and non synthetic blend please?!

Hey, while you are there I need a part number for a fuel filter.

 

Seriously thought after talking to comp cams a week or so ago they said to go with a dino oil for break in/cam install due to it carries dirt better than synthetic.
