Default Cam MPG Question.

Yeah I know we don't do a camswap and expect to get good mileage for the power they make. But this car is my daily driver and I just want to get a quick idea of what I might get after installing the cam.

Mods:
3" exhaust all the way back
Kooks LT headers 1 3/4"
ORY
3" cutout
Borla catback [open]
SLP cold air induction
7.400" pushrods
Melling High Volume Oil Pump
Comp Cam 232/240 .595/.604 114 lsa
Stock heads.
Stock Injectors.

Then getting a dyno tune RIGHT after cam install.

Give me an idea if you can. Also running 295s on the back and 275s up front if that makes a difference.

A nice build like that makes a bit more noise/thump/power and would likely cost you more given the fact that you may be leaving a bit more rubber around town. So I'd say around 3-12 around town and maybe 18-25 hwy depending on your speed.

BTW, is it an A4 or M6??? Might make a diff in mpg imo.

Haha! I already have a decent foot, I just like to get on it sometimes.

It's an M6, around town I usually keep it really easy since there is bacon on every corner.

Thats not too bad at all, especially with that lift. I've heard much worse with a 4l60e. How big is your stall?

I got something around 24.5 MPG on the highway with mine. never checked the city mileage. You get on it at all, and it will eat it up.

So far i'm seeing 13-15 city and 18 mostly 5th gear highway 65mph.

Def took a hit in the MPG department with the cam. I'm running a 233/239.

Cam shouldn't really hurt mileage unless you start lugging the motor. Mileage is about aerodynamic and rolling resistance more than HP potential of the engine. and lugging an engine is worse for mileage than letting it turn an rpm it is comfortable at.

Notice 5th gear at 65...

I don't lug an engine, it took a hit with the cam. It uses more fuel. Most is in the tune, but i didn't buy the car for gas mileage. I'm sure i could get better but driving how i always have with the car i'm seeing a consistant drop everywhere.

I'm surprisingly happy with all these answers lol. The cam isn't HUGE but I do want some power when I want to get on it. Hopefully the rear holds up.

I would say 13-16 city and maybe 22-25 Highway with 3.42 gears, just depending on how you drive it and the tune. City mileage is much more dependant on having a good tune. I have a 228r and get 18 city and just shy of 30 MPG still on the highway.

It was a 3000 fti. It has since been re-stalled to tighten it up for spray. So Idk at the moment. As mentioned above. I do tons of stop and go. My old job a few months ago it did a lot better. 5 miles with 3 lights mainly. Now I work 10 miles with about 15 or more red lights. It lugs because it has a big cam and 3.27s. I would do better in the city with a 3.73 because it wouldn't struggle to get up to a cruising speed. On the highway I have gotten 80 miles to a quarter of a tank if not more.

I have 2 cars, but I put serious miles on this car. did 700 miles in 2 days and 300 in 2 days last weekend.

An m6 doesn't have a converter to fight to get up to cruising speed. I agree a cam car will use more fuel, but that is because it is just a richer for a littler longer on start up than a bolt on car. my afr's are 14.8 to 15.3 or so everywhere else minus WOT. Just like a stock car.

Just because your AFRs are the same as stock, doesn't mean it's the same fuel usage.

A 800rwhp twin screw car has the same 14.8-15.3 AFRs as stock...does it mean it's going to use the same amount of fuel? Nope because it has more air and thus more fuel.

A bigger duration/higher lift cam will allow more air in the cylinder each intake stroke, thus it will require more fuel to attain the same stoich AFR, so it will use more fuel.

How you use the power created by that is going to have a bigger impact on overall fuel efficiency, but all in all a cammed car will use more fuel per stroke than a stock cam car.

That is surprisingly low. I would think with a M6 you'd be well over 20 on the highway.

Our Polluter cam customers with M6 transmissions achieve 23-26mpg regularly.
