Default Son of a....broken rocker.

Heard some odd noises from the front of my GTO. Shut it down and towed it home.

Opened her up and this is what I found.

Anyone know whether the head looks fixable?

Probably just better and cheaper to find a used head, in my opinion.

That's likely not a YT issue. Looks like a valve failure that sent the valve tip thru the rocker.

Ya think it was the infamous YT rock failure or something else caused it?

Looks like the rocker broke first, then the end of the rocker arm pushed down on the spring retainer letting the keepers come out. The valve then dropped into the piston and the rest is history.

Agree. The rocker, once broken, became a valve spring removal tool already in motion.

+2

It is always better to have more spring pressure than too little spring pressure. Curious as to what numbers you're currently running as well.

As far as saving the heads it does look feasible assuming there is enough area under the valve seat to remove, check for square, repress, and regrind. The rest of the head should not be too hard to blend....just very time consuming/tedious in effort not to overheat the head causing it to warp.

I'd also go digging in the bottom end to find the roller. Curious as to whether it has a flat spot or shows signs of discolouration due to overheating of some sort.

Just get a new head way cheaper and all new parts.

stock rockers
Check the rod to make sure it is not bent and new piston. prob about $700 in parts once you are done.

Yeah. That is what I suspect happened. Especially considering the reputation these rockers already have.

I'm 99% sure I found all of the pieces. Definitely no discoloration or flat spots. Other than being in pieces it looks pristine.

I also found the keepers. One was fine, the other was broken vertically like it was sheared.

Good question. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer and don't have the tools needed to test it myself. It was the .650 lift dual springs that came with the assembled TFS "As-Cast" 220 heads.

Correction, it's always better to have just enough spring pressure. Too much is just as detrimental as too little.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure you guys will, but aren't these the OLD YT rockers? I thought the new ones were stamped "1.7" on the side?

Either way, once you go over 400#, they become a gamble. Just not worth it in my book.

Yup. Thats the cause of failure right there.

You're right

Old ones have the stamp in the middle, new ones have the stamp offset to the right.

I feel your pain, that sucks when **** like that happens!
It does still make me really glad I went back to stock rockers, before any major damage could be done to my engine, after having several yt issues!

Just out of curiosity, did you run / have any issues with the new revision? I've yet to see a failure since the new design has rolled out (and I've been looking for them)
