Default Wot oil pressure drop from 65 to 40 pounds

I've been having an issue with my car I noticed if I floored it at around 5k rpms the oil pressure would fall from a solid 65 pounds to 40 pounds. I checked my oil level I was a half quart low. I added a half quart into my engine problem countinued. Overfilled it by a half quart the problem seems to be gone. I find it hard to believe my h/c car is sucking the pan dry with a stock ls6 pump. The oil filter was clear of any bearing material so any ideas what the cause could be?

When installing the cam I was very careful with thd o ring for the pump also so I doubt its that

Could just be a bad oil pressure gage or you OPSU has gone bad on you. Your best bet is to hook ip a manual oil pressure gage and see what it does when you go WOT.

I was also thinking that originally but after filling it to 6.5 quarts cured the issue I don't see how the it could be the guage or the sending unit it should countinue to do it dispite the oil level in the pan. Could it be possible my pickup was sucking air at 5.5 and 6 quarts? The pump is a stock ls6 pump on a heads/ cam car with 4.30 gears.

Are you sure the pick up isn't loose or not fully positioned deep in the sump like it should be?

what pan.

A lot has to do with the pickup placement in the pan. Most of the GM pans are horrible at best

Stock f body pan. I would love for this to be the issue as I've been worried to death over finding a bad thrust bearing but I haven't found any concrete info about stock pumps doing this. Whenever it does happen it always seems to level out at 40 psi and doesn't continue dropping.

No expert, only time mine ever did that was when my oil had thinned out & needed replacing.
Idled at 40, increased with revs to 60 then when hot enough at revs 'road racing' it would drop to 40.
Changed the oil, issue gone.
Not to say this is your problem though
