530hp/510tq on a land and sea dyno. He said it reads 7% lower than a dynojet. Nice flat torque and power curve. Peak hp was at 5800 and held it to 6300. We didn't pull past that, it just leveled off and didn't nose dive. Considering it reads lower, your at about 570 hp. Not bad for a dual plane, stock casting head and not a giant cam. Held at least 450 fp of tq from 2900 to 6100. And at least 500 from 4000 to 5000. I'll see if I can post the graph.

Like I said on the phone Matt, we could of put more cam and a better intake on it and pushed the peak numbers up 40-60 numbers.

That wasn't what you wanted though. An easily drivable combo that produced a flat torque curve across the operating range that shifts at 6400rpm was what you told me you wanted.

I think we hit the nail on the head.

Hell yes you hit it on the head! Its everything I wanted.i especially like out it doesn't just fall off at 6000, it levels out a bit.

Update............

After much changes and dyno runs and changing cams, intakes, checking clearances, and other theories. We were low on power and finally changed the heads to afr 230s. With those heads and a dual plane intake it made 591hp @ 6000 and 574tq @ 4600. Then we put on a Vic jr and made 601hp @ 6100 and 556tq @ 5300. Martin helped along the way and was great to deal with.

So, what did you change to acheive the extra 60 to 70 HP?

So the AFR 230 were that much better than the AI ported LS6 heads?

Yep. Disassembled the AI heads and checked out the port job then flowed them........

Very disappointed with AI on this deal to be honest. Gaining 60hp just by swapping the heads is mind blowing. If I had not been in on the entire process of testing different cams, manifolds and carbs on this engine I would of never believed that it was possible or plausible.

I am however very glad that Matt now has the power he should of had from the beginning.

This is not what I was wanting to hear, I am in the process of acquiring parts for my build now and was 100% on AI Porting my 799 Heads. I am going to get a custom cam from you Martin but this really bites me in the butt over AI.

Was the AFR's out of the box? Or Ported?

Edit - Just read again this was on a over 4.00" bore engine maybe AI's will be fine on under 4.00" bore

Great numbers on build!!!!!

Nice matt K I chased 50hp. My motor was in the car so it made the process difficult. I remember the day I'm starring @ the motor, the headers were off as I was swapping out the clutch. I'm looking at the heads thinking it's not that bad to take em off @ that point......I had covered all the other bases. Off with the heads, had them flowed, replaced them & it all came together. Same dyno & no other changes to skew the results.

My cylinder heads were not AI btw, just sharing the feel good story with matt K

thanks for sharing, i was in the same boat. i was lucky that i had a engine dyno about 10 miles from my house. i was able to change just one thing at a time and see the results which was good in the process. i wasnt mad about the numbers but more unimpressed. so after talking with martin we decided to see if a cam change did anything, no change. when i say no change i mean nothing. so then after talking with multiple " top guys " they all told me its the intake, so i put a vic jr on it and no change. i told them what i did and they said it still wasnt big enuff, so i put a super vic on it and it gained like 10hp which i consider not much really. next another told me the motor sounded to tight, so apart the motor came to look at bearings, pistons, ect. all look great, leak down and cranking compression was good. wasnt much else to change except the heads, so i put out of the box AFR230s on it and put it all back together with the first dual plane intake and cam and it made 594hp, then just for fun we tried the vic jr and made 601.

Sweet! One thing that was very apparent with mine was tuning. It did not matter where you went with the AFR, pig bloody rich or melt down lean the power was low. I never did a tear down as the short block was the only thing that seemed correct, but a cam change & a many other things. I was told by some big names to chase dyno's until I seen the numbers I was happy with.
