Lightbulb Pulling the motor from the top?

So, I've pretty much stripped my motor down. The only thing attached to it is the transmission. I've unhooked all wiring, exhaust, a/c, p/s, etc from the motor. It's just sitting there.

At this point, I've decided it would probably be easier to just go ahead and pull it to do the rest of the heads/cam build and R&R the transmission.

I know a lot of folks prefer from the bottom, but I don't have a lift and I've already pretty much disassembled the motor. To drop from the bottom on the k-member, a lot of things need to be disconnected like the brake master cylinder, the front brake lines, the PCM wiring harness, and steering shaft among many little things.

If I pull from the top, I see absolutely no reason to do any of that. I just need to unbolt the engine from the k-member (which will suck) and unbolt the trans from the car and driveshaft and the whole thing should pop right out. I might have to disconnect the starter for it to clear. But I guess I can check that as I do it.

Right? What am I missing to pull it out through the top? As long as the k-member stays in place, all of the items that connect the k-member to the car (like brake lines and PCM) don't need to be messed with, correct?

I think folks say pull it from the bottom because taking everything off a motor is a pain in the *** when its still in the car. Now that I've done it, I should be able to just yank it out.

You may have to take your balancer pulley off. Im not sure but I dont think you can pull the engine and tranny out the top. You will probably have to pull the tranny out the bottom first and then pull the engine.

As long as it's high enough on jack stands I don't see why the trans can't come too. Intake and balancer are off. Heads are still on. But they aren't really in the way.

I have done several motor swaps from the top on my car. Balancer can stay on but all other acc must be off. I have never had the trans attached though.

I figure if I start pulling the engine and the trans hits the floor, I can probably get to those bellhousing bolts pretty easily...

One thing I'd like to be able to do is drop it back in with the heads, intake, and headers back on. Might be a pipe dream...

Headers will have to be off. Intake and heads can be on. I always put the oil pressure sending unit on after the motor is bolted Down. It breaks too easy

I think so I have no probably taking everything off.. plus I don't have room to pull from the bottom , I pretty much got everything off as well... I have seen a few posts on here where someone said they keep the tranny attached .. let me know how it goes id rather pull the engine and tranny in one piece as well...

You can pull the engine and tranny out the top as one piece. I've done it several times. Balancer can stay on as well. Remove the hood and get a engine hoist with a long reach. Harbor Freight has one that works great.

I'm sure if you have the car jacked up in the front And have a "leveler" on the chain of the cherry picker, it could be done

I just went through this. Pulled engine and trans together out the top. I had intake and heads off, also all the front accessories, but the pulley was left on. Also the radiator was out. I had to remove the front bumper cover and foam support to get my hoist close enough.

It came out easy enough, going back was another story. With heads back on and trans bolted to the engine it went back in the way it came out but was a pain with all of the wiring and vacuum lines, etc. The one major benefit I see to taking it out the bottom would be for ease of assembly if you are retaining all of the smog equipment.

It's really not that bad. Jist remove the accessories off the front. Heads can stay on. I just had some short jackstands too.

Offset your hook on your hoist so that the engine amd tranny naturally tilts backwards. Took me a couple tries to get the right link on the hook for the correct angle.

I've got the car pretty far in the air. I think it'll work no problem.

I pulled the motor out and put it back in with the trans attached (it was a 1998 Z28 M6).

It's tight, but it will go...
