Default LQ4 to 450hp?

Considering purchasing a 2001 gmc C3 truck similar to one I owned years ago and want to get the LQ4 engine (325hp 6.0) to 425-450 hp @ the crank and still have good drivability and decent mpg and stay N/A. The former truck I ran an sc and then a turbo on, but want to run just a decent cr for the street On this one and perhaps nitrous if I go to the track so 450 would be plenty on engine alone.

Ideas? (budget is $4-5K max)

Shouldn't be hard at all... You can make 450whp with that budget, but gas mileage won't be pretty. Might as well run a 150 shot of nitrous.

If you read the thread you would see nitrous is in the plans AFTER the engine build. Not going to use nitrous on the street.

headers and cam kit should put you in that range

stall gears, cam headers and mileage should NOT be a problem. If 450fwhp makes for dismal mileage then the tune is crap or something else is wrong with the setup.

If "stall and gears" makes you ASSume bad mileage then leave it stock. Lugging it will hurt mileage more than proper gears and stall. How tall a tire are you going to run?

consider some 243/799 heads to raise the compression .check out a cam from EPS.a bit spendy ,but consider a fast truck intake .

If you used the search function you would have gotten a much wider variety of answers.

stock truck intake is fine for a mild goal like this.

Yes, 450rwhp can be achieved rather easily. It's been done countless times.

I have a lq4 408 with wiesco flat tops with -3cc reliefs an EPS grind 236/242 .629/.629 114+2 LSA with lightly worked L92 heads and a stock LS3 intake. I made 440whp on a mustand dyno, and ran 12.63 at 117.5 with street tires in the 1/4. I have mine in an 02 camaro with a t56 and i get anywhere from 15-18 mpg.

Are you trying to discourage him from every piece in your setup? Heads/cam LT1s run more MPH.

My old heads/cam setup of 190cc AI LT1 heads ran 12.7 on street tires in my Caprice, never tried with the current heads/cam setup.

very easy to do.. at the wheel 450hp might take heads,cam,exhaust,intake.. at the crank, headers, cam, intake might do it..

Those who keep saying intake. You realize it is the true LS1 intake that leaves a fair amount of room on the table right?
The truck intake is better, pretty close to the LS6 intake.

Not saying it is the best option but for the money..........................................

I have even seen guys blindly swap car manifolds onto trucks believing anything truck had to be lower performance.

Truck is better than the LS1 intake. Its been proven, specially on boost setups.

OP... Consider pretty much any bolt on with some milled and ported 243 heads with a custom grind cam

My current setup is a little behind what you want, but close at ~400 horse. LQ4, stock 243 heads, 222/226 EPS cam, long tubes and stock truck intake and throttle body. The throttle body is a bit too small, at WOT the manifold pressure is at 95 Kpa. 400 HP is an estimate from my 1/4 mile trap speed of 106 mph with a weight of 4200 pounds.
