Default LS1 or LS2 ?

Have a 98 Z28 , that is starting show it's age. Will not be using the motor that is in the car now , it will be a new shortblock going in it.

Parts that will be used on either shortblock are :
Fast 92/92 intake set-up
799 heads - AI 232 port program
1 3/4 headers / ory
Tick Performance Street Heat Stage 1 cam (ls1 or ls2 line up)
Stock rockers with Comp upgrade
LS7 lifters with LS2 trays
LS2 chain

Really leaning towards the LS2 for the added cubes and don't want an iron block.

You already made the right choice...cubes, the only trade off is the price difference...a good used ls2 is hard to come by, cheap anyways...good luck on the build

I understand not wanting the extra weight from the iron block, but for the price, availability, ability to bore and stroke, etc...I think it's a great choice! Unless you road race or whatnot, the extra 80-100 lbs can EASILY be made up with another 10-15 hp. Just my opinion...

Go with the LS2 if funds allow. If not, rhe TMS 370 is hard to beat for the money. $1999 i believe? And get the Street Heat Stage 2 (LS2) from Martin.

They have been awesome to deal with actually! I've probably called Kyle like 15 times over the last month or so, and he has been very helpful and understanding! Some of the best customer service i've ever had to be honest!

The extra weight of an iron block does make a difference. Cheap is not always best. I speak based on my own experience in the past.

We do have LS2 blocks as well starting at $2599 built in a new LS2 block and including all of the great things you have come to expect in Thompson Motorsports motors. Also just to clarify, The difference in weight from aluminum to iron is typically 69-71lbs with the LSx as an exception. Both will make excellent motors, Feel free to call as we are always here to help you find the perfect match for your needs.

Thank you for the kind words HCI2000SS, We put as much push on customer service as possible before and long after the sale. We know that many companies have moved to the make the sale and move on style and we have no interest in that. We love to see what people are doing with our motors and plan to continue with that style of business.

I'd go with the weight savings of the LS2. Even though the price is a bit more steep, you'll be saving weight and have greater displacement.

I can attest to Thompson's service. While we normally build our own engines, we had a customer just recently who brought us a Thomspon short block.

There were some issues with cam fitment and possible bearing clearances, but Thompson took the lead on getting the motor back to them and fixing the problem for the customer.

In the end the root of the problem doesn't matter or what the actual problem was, it's how the problem is handled and taken care of that matters. Thompson handled it like a good shop would.

If I was looking for a short block and didn't have someone local to me to build me one, I'd highly consider a Thompson engine.

Kyle,

It's easy for me to recommend you guys as we now have two customers making very nice power with your short block and my cam combination.

It's a good 1-2 punch!!!
