Default Stock cam, stock springs?

If you were rebuilding a completely stock ls1, with the stock cam, would you reuse the stock (75k mile) valve springs, or is there a reason to upgrade to the ls6 springs?

Thanks

No I would not reuse something so critical to the engine that 1) wears out eventually and 2) is very inexpensive to replace.

If it wasn't a wear and tear item or if it was really expensive I would say depending on the build. But since it's something that wears out and they can be had for under 75 bux why not. Cheap peace of mind.

No, its not worth doing all that work to and put in old springs, they are cheap replace them not worth the 75 dollar saving just to have more problems down the road.

I see your points, but here's why I posted in the first place. This is a replacement motor for my truck. My budgets f@$ked and its quickly becoming a stock rebuilt 5.7 ls1, instead of the 243 heads and custome cam. The current engine is a 4.8, and has over 150,000 miles.

How are the springs in the 4.8 know to easily last 200,000 miles, yet the 5.7 ls1 springs need to be changed at 75k?

Should I buy stock replacements or the ls6 springs?

Noone said they had to be, most of us are saying it's a good idea and it's very cheap and easy to do.

I know some stock LS1 parts have been superseded by LS6 or LS2 parts, like the timing chain for example. Does anybody know if this is the case with the valve springs?

Just replace them - silly to go so far and cheap out on something silly.

Errr ... no. You should replace them.

Here is a good link. You can filter between each brand with the drop down to make things easier to look through.

Good luck.

The engine in the Z28 I bought had 14X,XXX so I thought it was time to replace the stock springs regardless of their condition. Found a set of used ls6's for cheap, spent a day swapping them with the heads/engine still in the car. Immediately noticed the car pulled harder on the top end.

I have a bungee cord that has 75,000 jumps on it... It looks ok, so I should be good to take the leap right?

I have seen several dynos of stock setups that show the springs do weaken with miles and even LS1 springs need replacing. You may not notice driving the car, but the dyno doesn't lie. Personally, I would put in a set of LS6 valve springs to refresh the heads. Not sure what your plans are for the heads, but I would at least disassemble, clean them and then lap the valves for a good seal.

I would buy new ones, you can't tell if a spring is good unless you test them on a spring tester, even "used" ones can still be garbage, my buddy dropped a valve and mangled a piston/rod doing that, it would prob cost more to get them tested then to buy ls6 springs

The stock ls1 I bought to swap in my car with around 50k miles on it had a flat cam from bad valvesprings.

I would replace them with cheap ls6 springs

The heads will be getting a valve job, and the seals need replacing as well. After buying ls6 springs, locks, and seals, I'm somewhere above $130 after shipping. But I would still be limited on my cam choice.

This lunati kit seems to be a good bargain, at just around $100 more. This would allow me to run just about any cam I wanted.
