Default ls6 crate vs. 382 all-bore vs. h/c/i...help please

o.k. i have a 98 t/a a4 the motor had 58,000 miles on it and uses no oil and has no piston slap even though i beat on it daily. i was considering going with an ls6 crate motor or longblock with an aftermarket cam or maybe a 382 all bore, but im thinking since my motor is trouble free maybe i should just get some ls6 heads/intake and an aftermarket cam. give me your input as to reliability vs. power vs. price. btw the car is a daily driver/racer rarely sees the track.

joe

If memory serves you're looking at $20,000 vs $9,000 vs $6,000.
Pretty big neighborhood you're in.
Hardly to the track? Guess you just to screw with it, go H/C.

If I were you at that mileage I would re do the top end. Heads/Cam/Timing chain.... Then around 100K I would look to freshen up the bottom end. My $.02

I'd do heads/cam. When it blows up eventually, then build a 382 all bore bottom end for it.

LS6 crate motor is kinda a dumb idea.

My ls6 crate engine runs great. It idles smooth and is very stealthy. No one would guess it makes 405.7 rwhp with GM reliablity. Don't sound so dumb after all does it.

HioSSilver, thats pretty impressive for a bolt on LS6. I hear you can get a crate motor for around 7k and some for even less, is this true?

H/C would cost under $3000 for parts

02 LS6 longblock i see go for around $4500 all day and i believe they come with a warranty.

I'd go with the LS6

wait where can i find an ls6 longblock for $4500 from. i keep seeing $6000-$7000 even at gmpartsdirect and my local dealer cost plus ten% for that money i could get a 382 all bore longblock w/stage 2 heads and cam.

There is not alot of difference between the ls6 block and a ls1, the main thing between the 2 long blocks is the heads, the ls6 heads is where you pick up your gains...Do a search on ls1 block vs ls6...

There are actually a good number of differences between the LS1 and LS6 block... Its just that none of the differences are noticeable from the standpoint of power production, so no one really cares.

But back to fatboy's post. If you can afford an all bore 382 with ported heads, then that would definately be sweet. Maybe not the most practical of your options, but it would certainly make the most power, and only cost a grand or two more.
