Wait I just thought a little more about this....you actually think the lifters can come out of their bores if no pushrod is on them...hmmm then why doesn't it happen when someone breaks a pushrod.......

Its completely safe to run this way.

This is when things break.

This even happens to some when the motor is at rest during a camshaft change. This is why most use wood dowels and/or pen magnets to hold the lifters up during the cam change.

As for the broken pushrod thing. It does happen sometimes. Also, most people aren't stupid enough to drive hundreds of miles on a bent or broken valve train.
I seen many a ls1 with broken pushrods driven many miles...........

Just because you can drive Florida to New York with a broken lifter and wiped cam lobe does not mean that you should do it...

On another note I spun a bearing a few months after replacing the cam and lifter...

Yeah these all aluminum engines are fickle to say the least. Way too many variables, everyone runs different and has different problems. Most LS1 cars suffer from oil usage and if you don't look after that bad things happen quickly.

They are way too fickle if you don't know what you're doing...Ls engines are by far one of the easiest and most reliable engines out there..
