Default MS4 cam questions

I have a 2000 Trans Am WS-6 M6 with a 228r cam and am considering changing to an MS4 cam. My car currently puts out 391whp with the cam, Pace Setter LT headers, and an SLP 85mm MAF. Could I expect to see any power gains by swapping to the MS4? What valve springs are recommended for the MS4? And what pushrod length should I go with? All advice and opinions are appreciated. Thanks

Nick

I'd say to save your $$$ for a better set of heads, if you're still running stock that is.

I am still running the stock 853 heads. Any recommendation on a good set of heads?

I sent my stock 241's to TEA for a makeover and full CNC port work. Stage 1 with New PAC springs, retainers, locks, etc. OTD will be under 1100 shipped to my door.

Typical gains are said to be 40+rwhp from well ported stock LS1 castings. more for 243/799's...

Look for a set of used 243/799 heads, get them ported and you have a great head for the money, also check out Texas Speeds PRC head packages.

I have a MS4, and if you are a die hard gear head, it's fine. It sounds great and you will get alot of comments and envious stares, that being said it does not have great street manners, it jerks around and lunges also. A good tuner will help with some of that, but lunging is it's nature. On performance my mph is down in the 1/4 mile, best just on motor is 114mph. Your cam usually nets around 117mph to 122mph on stock bottom end. Just food for thought, happy wrenching!

Keep your current cam, upgrade your heads and increase compression.

Drivability will definitely go down some and your power band will be pushed a lot higher. I love my MS4 but my car is mainly a track car with the 215s my car doesn't peak until 6900. I would say you'd pick up 15 or so rwhp but I personally would leave the cam alone and do heads.

That 228R is a good cam. Throw some heads on it and a FAST and pickup a lot more than a swap to the MS4 would net you. You'd see maybe 20rwhp with the MS4, but you'll see 40-55rwhp out of heads and another 15rwhp from the FAST.

ditto on the heads and intake... That MS4 would need to breathe, so you wouldn't make much more power swapping to that cam... Stock heads don't have the flow characteristics needed to utilize the extra lift or duration.

that cam is a dinosaur ,so many better grinds n lobes out these days,i would go with better heads n work on getting a rear end if its a m6, big cams on stock gearing are dogs, also you will have a better running car swapping some heads on, i have a ms4 and i can tell you that cam needs every bit of all the supporting mods to be a runner, great heads, bigger exhaust, fast intake blah blah blah, also 90% of people that get huge cams usally pull them for something smaller,if its a street car youll want low / mid range, you just dont want all top end unless its a car that sees more track use than street, now if your looking for a bigger cam ,eps, tick, frutal,b.tooley, etc are all good places to talk to,im pulling my ms4 if your looking for one but im warning you now there are so many better cams out there, good luck man, like i said thats a good cam you have and i think heads would be a much better buy, then start working on the rest of the car

and only fools buy a cam for sound , ill take a better thought out set up over any donkey dick cam, you also can get a great sound over a much smaller profile, lets be honest how manybig cam cars run killer? not many ,at one point my car was a complete dog, there are a handful that run great but the everyday bolt on car with a donkey cam isnt going to do all that well vs one with killer heads, right exhaust,a rear with at least 4.10-4.30 gears, now you can get them to move but you still have a car with all its power near the moon, this is just my 2 cents , i have been in alot of cammed ls cars and mine performed the worst and had the biggest cam, i think sticking in the lower 230s is much better for these cars, again its imo, just what i went through ,others prob will differ

IMO keeping the 228r would be your best bet. As everyone else said, head/intake will do much better than swapping to the ms4. The 228r is one of the most proven cams as far as overall performance and drive ability for a street driven car. The ms4 pulls like a train but it needs rpms to get going.
