Default scrap yard 243 heads.

I work in a scrap yard, and I stumbled on a pair of heads. One 799 and one 243. They are a little banged up, but I feel they can be machined. Wanted to deck them anyhow. What do you think. Pictures attached.

Ask the head shop how far you have to mill to take that gouge out between the 2 combustion chambers..

But they will be a tough sale since they have been banged up..

Maybe a junkyard engine guy might take em off your hands for cheap

I'm actually the junkyard in this situation. Looking to liven up my ls1 a little while I build a forged 6.0 for boost the next year or so. If it doesn't run over 600 to put better springs, valve job and mill ill do it, but asking advice on whether its worth it. Can't beat free castings, even if they aren't pretty. As long as it functions I'm happy.

Nothing a little tig weld couldn't fix if the gouge it to deep to mill out. I have done this many times from damage form engine failure. Nice thing about aluminum it's easy to repair.

The gouge between the cylinders is the only real problem. From the pictures, it looks like it would be fixed after milling the head .030" or less. Then I agree, have a valve job cut on the intakes and exhausts to be safe, and then have them assembled for the cam you're using. All of that should be under $450.

THIS plus a decent set of dual springs (Tooley, TSP, or Lunati)....good to go
for free castings.......only thing to verify is that the 243 is a non-Vette head
with the standard length/weight valves.

If that gouge is small enough to come out with a reasonable cut I don't see anything else major with the heads.

I would take them to the machine shop and see what they say. I would heir on the side of having them spot welded which should be cheap then just a light pass to level em out and a nice valve job. You will have a set of like new heads for under the price of a used set.

Fix em and run them.. You're gonna spend 450 regardless on someone else's junk.. Might as well invest in your own...

Wow thought those would be unusable. Never thought welding that gouge in would work. Definitely cool.

There is a couple spots that need touched up. Pm me and we will work this out. I'll throw you a bit of cash. I was thinking of tig welding it anyhow. I'm a welder myself but dont have access to a tig.

The Gouge isn't very deep at all. Only 2 bad spots on both heads. I'm positive that its A truck 243, and the reason it was in my scrapyard is that a company seperates the aluminum from ironwhen they scrap. You guys would puke if you saw all of the gen V blocks that Gm scraps after quality testing as well.
