Default hey guys can i get your input on buying my first Ls based engine?

i was looking for a what to look for and stuff on buying my first engine it will be a pullout one i have my eye on is a 6.0 iron block 317 heads complete harness engine everything ready to go it is supposed to be a 02 model engine with around 80k on it. my questions are how to actually determine year of the engine small things of that nature. whether or not it is actually a 6.0 since somewhere i have seen smaller displacement blocks that had been stamp for larger ones.
any help or info i would appreciate thanks in advance.

6.0L block will say 6.0L passenger side rear of the engine.

The PN will be on the driver's side rear of the engine. I'm not sure if GM differentiated the PNs to know whether it's an LQ4 or LQ9 6.0L (LQ9 had flat top pistons and more compression).

I don't have it handy right now, but someone can post up the numbers for you to cross-reference.

Can't go wrong with casting numbers. This list was taken from the Summit Racing website and was part of a Hot Rod magazine article on LS1 basics. Sorry about the small text. It's a PDF file so magnify it to 175% or so.

Not to mention if you get the ECM and harness with the deal, The ECM will have the VIN and year and type of vehicle it came out of.
