Default 799 head question

Hello, so I just picked up a set of 799 heads for $350 on fleabay. I think it's a great deal. They came off a 05 silverado. Only thing is the guy said they have 225k miles on them and he wouldn't run them without a valve job.

I'm planning on putting them on my 04 GTO LS1. My question to you guys is, instead of doing a 3 angle valve job do you guys think they would be ok if I just re-lapped them? My plan is to take it to a machine shop have them deck them, hot tank them and press in new guides. I will take the valves to my work media blast them check them for wear with a mic, then re-lap them to the head.

Do you guys foresee any problems if I put in new guides new seals and springs, then lap the valves in instead of getting a 3angle job done?

I know the 3 angle is much better it's just it costs a ton more and I'm on a budget. I don't really have the money for it. Thanks for your input.

The real question should be 3 or 5 angle valve job. Dont skip it. Otherwise you're going to invest a lot of time swapping heads for rather disappointing results.

If you replace the guides, you HAVE to cut a new VJ. Otherwise the VJ won't be concentric to the guide and **** blows up.

Ok thank you for the replies. I did not know that you had to a valve job if you replace the guides. Thank you very much.

The machine shop I talked to said they would do the decking, hot tank, replace the guides and cut a 3 angle for $600 total. Does that sound reasonable? I had planned on sending them out one day to AI to have it fully CNC'd have SS valves put in and have a 5 angle done. Do you think I should wait and have that done? That will probably cost like $1500 plus.

I wanted to be able to run these a reap the benefits on an LS1 before I had saved up enough to have them fully worked.

Second thought I think I'll forego the AI work. This is a street car. Not a Racecar. And is my DD. So I guess I'll go with the 3 angle job and bolt these suckers on. The HP increase over my 241's will be enough to keep me happy with my cam.

I hate to point it but your only going to be $250 from having been able to just but some brand new TSP LS6 stage 1's.

Very true.. But I'm not a fan of any PRC springs or any of that. And to get a bare head with no valves or anything they only knock off $200 from the price. I already checked.

AI has a "performance rebuild" option that sounds about perfect for what you are doing and the price is going to be about what you are looking at now but is a shop that is likely more familiar with the 799 head and probably has a better valvejob. Not just angles but better equipment than most local shops.

I would seriously consider getting them ported now or you will be just pulling them to do it later and then the car will be down while they are sent off.

If you're not going to get them ported, I wouldn't even waste the time and money to swap them on unless you are at least having to change lifters while the heads are off. The gains aren't very fruitful.

The stage 1's don't come with an aftermarket spring standard. They sell for $1200.00 with stock springs and valves. They are cnc'd with a valve job though.
