Default Lifter pressure

I installed new lifters http://www.ebay.com/itm/220970210090...84.m1497.l2649 in my 6.0. Had them soaking in oil for a couple days and lash measured out to 1 1/8 on the rocker arm bolt. Once I started it up it was really, really REALLY noisey. Sounded like all the rockers were loose. I rechecked all the bolts and then noticed the lifters seem to compress too easily, comparing them to the older ones they felt like they had a much weaker spring inside. Installed I can compress them by pushing down on the rocker with my thumb, the old ones are hard to compress using both of my hands. Can anyone test their lifters and see how difficult they are to compress installed? Pretty sure these lifters are my problem, but want to make sure before I start cussing people out on the phone.

How long did you run the motor? It takes awhile on startup to get quiet the first time.

Default Running time

I let it idle for about 5-10 minutes while I filled the radiator. Got a little quieter, but still a lot of clatter.

Your preload is a little on the light side. Did you change anything other than the lifters?

So let's see...knockoff lifters manufactured in china by some kid with a match and a hammer are noisy. Go figure.

Default Update for lifters.

Got new lifters installed, ls7's. They looked just like the stock lifters for my lq4, and definitely had more pressure than the unbranded ones from ebay. These came in AC Delco packaging, and have the oil hole in the right place. Luckily I'm getting my money back for the first POS lifters I got. Truck runs great now and I only have the sewing machine sound I had before not the clacking I had of loose rockers.

I had a similar experience with my LS7 lifters. I lubed them up with some oil before dropping them down in there, but didn't let them soak. Started it up and there was only chatter for 3-5 seconds max--21k later no problems. Next time I install lifters I'll know to soak them.

First off, if these "lifters" or whatever the hell you want to call them are anywhere near factory specifications, you're going to need a little more preload than "1 1/8th" turn.

That's only 0.052875" preload. You'll need a little longer push rod to quiet it down.

But being these cheap ebay lifters that you convinced yourself to purchase, it's probably no where near factory spec.

Do the job over again with LS7 lifters for the fraction of the price.

Luigiandme, guess you didn't see that I updated my thread saying I replaced them with ls7's. Didn't say preload for the new ones but they were in spec. Your post pretty much said the same thing I did, old ones sucked new name brand ones work.

Ahh! Passed right by me. That sewing machine sound may still be improper preload. Not totally off but just enough to give you that noise. You had 1 1/8th turn to torque down even with the ls7's?

You are completely wrong and should stop spreading this info. It's obvious to me that you have never actually measured for preload, you just use the internet myth method of .049" per turn. I have news for you, that method is bs. On my old setup I was running about .085" preload and that was about 1 1/16 turn of the rocker bolt.

1 full turn is fine to run but it is not .049" preload.

I measured my lifter preload with a magnetic base dial indicator, and also found that the "myth" of .049 per turn did not apply at all. Eric L

I remember that long, bickering back and forth thread... lots of math and formulas and all kinds of stuff.

All I know is a few different builers told me to shoot between 3/4 turn, to 1 1/4 turn from zero lash, with 1 full turn being optimal. (LS7 lifters)

I know there's a better and more precise way to do it, obviously, and if I was running short travel lifters, you're damn right I'd do it the right way.
