Default 5.3 tsp 220r cam or 224r cam?

I have a 93 4x4 s10 that I have put a 2000 5.3 with 862 heads. The engine is completely stock. it has headers true dual exhaust a 2800 stall converter with a 4l60e. It also has 35'' tires and 4.30 gears. I daily drive this truck and also do mud races. I have a reprogrammed pcm from lt1swap.com currently and it has all been working great. I Now want to upgrade cams and a good tune. I Was looking at texas speed 220r cam or 224r cam but I don't know which one will give me the best benefit from my setup. I want the most power as possible but I also want the combo to work well together. I was also thinking about getting the mail order tune that texas speed offers while I am doing it. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I know this is different than most setups on this website but you guys know ls engine better than anyone.

The 224R cam will give you the best power output out of those two cams and will work well with your set up. That being said if you think you will spend a lot of time in the mud or pulling any trailers I would go with the 220R cam so that you can bring that power band and torque in a little sooner. With either cam I would go with a 112° LSA. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call. I'd be more than happy to go over your set up with you.

does anyone know what the difference in horsepower and torque would be between these 2 cams with my setup?

Have you looked at the 228R? Also do you want a smooth or choppy idle?

You'd be looking at a 10rwhp difference between the two cams.

I thought the 228 was too big for a stock 5.3. The choppier the better as far as idle goes. I just want the most bang for the buck while im doing it. I only have a 2800 stall and I don't want to have to go up on stall speed anytime soon. And the important thing is that they can get it tuned correctly through a mail order tune. If you guys think a different cam is better for what im looking for I am open to suggestions.

I'd actually go with a cam smaller than a 220/220.
This is about the largest I'd go with, Lunati VooDoo #20540713 (217/223 113lsa+4, lift .549"/.549").

If you do a lot of towing I'd go even smaller like the Lunati VooDoo #20540710
(212/218 113lsa+4, lift .531"/.531").

Here's one from Cam Motion, largest I'd recommend.
218/222 112lsa+4, lift .595"/.586"

They can also do a custom grind for your particular needs/wants.

if you don't mind using more aggressive cam lobes the take a look at the Comp Cams #54-455-11 (215/223 112lsa+5, lift .604"/.610"). this one would be good for towing, mudding, DD, whatever.

i want to go with the biggest cam possible that will make the most power and I want texas speed to do a mail order tune when I order the cam. I don't want to leave any power on the table. Will those other cams outperform the texas speed cams?

With top-end power, no.

Below 4k, yes.

IMO, if you really want to go with the 224, then get it with a 110-111 lsa which will have a slightly lower power band, and better low-end power.

If you check out the truck forums the 220 cam is one of the best cams for the 5.3.

So you're going to run just stock 5.3 heads?

If you don't want to leave any power on the table a mail order tune is not the way to go. You will get the most out of a Dyno-tune. Every set-up acts different.

I saw this today and posted in another thread:

http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...n/viewall.html

The 224 cam made more average power and torque in a 5.3L over the 210 cams. Don't be afraid to cam. Because of the 3.622" stroke, it will respond to a cam just like an LS1, just with lower total power output due to the bore restriction and smaller CID. But the curve will look the same.

224 all the way.

well I was also trying to use a big enough cam that would still work well if I ever found 6.0 to swap in its place. I know the 228r works well in 6.0 but I didn't know how well it would work in a stock 5.3
