Default 50th corvette cam suggestions

I'm getting ready to put new lifters in my friends '03 corvette (5.7l non z06). I keep reading that swapping in a z06 cam (along with upraded valve springs) will really wake the car up. I guess my question is, is the z06 cam the best option, or should I go with something else? I am just looking to get a little more out of the engine, I'm not expecting a night and day difference. I also don't want to have to reprogram the computer at this time.

This job kind of came out of the blue, normally I'd have more time to do more research. I am currently helping him with a ls2 install (and complete restore) in his '80 stepside. He informed me yesterday the corvette was starting to make some noise, and it's the lifters. I've done lots of research on the ls2 truck engine as far as cams go, but the corvette is a different engine altogether. Any help you guy's can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I drove my EPS cam 218/226 for over 2500 trouble free miles on the stock tune. Did it pick up with a tune ??? Absolutely it was more crisp however it ran well with no issues at all. I did mill the 241s .030" for a bit more compression.

If you want to swap cams, your going to need a tune. As far as cams go, there are a lot better cams out there than the z06 cam. It's tempting because that cam is cheap. But to make a cam swap worthwhile, go with something like a Texas speed 224r. It's a proven cam.
And just an fyi, when you swap out the lifters, be sure you buy new lifter trays. It's cheap insurance.

not really sure by what you mean about the ls2 being completely different? the truck ls2 is the same ls2 that went into the 05 vette, and the ls1 in the 03 vette is the same as any other ls1 put into gto's or fbodys. All ls engines are very similar with just a few parts changing over the years like sensors and head type.

i personally would put a decent cam in it. any cam is going to need a tune so why not just go with a decent one and not look back. does the car have any other mods

Exactly...The effort is the same, might as well step up a little on the cam. Definitely new trays or tie bar lifters, the Morel street series can be bought for 329 from several vendors...Morel also has a set of drop in lifters for 185.00, p#5315 (will require lifter trays). I would spend a little more on the lifter setup and go better than OEM, would also recommend Brian Tooley's valve springs.

If you plan to go through the trouble of swapping out the cam and springs I wouldn't do the ls6 cam. Sure it will work fine and drive nice, but there are much better options out there that will make more power and still drive just as good. Get in contact with one of the sponsors here they will set you up with an awesome cam package.

Look at the Comp Cams #54-424-11, 212/218 115lsa +0, lift .558"/.563", it has -15* overlap, and a IVC of 41, and the lobes it uses are the Xtreme RPM (highlift) lobes which are fairly mellow cam lobes (ramp rate is 53).IMO, all it needs is a good set of beehive single valve springs.
It should run fine with out a tune, but still best with one! This cam will have a stock sounding idle.

For valve springs, a set of PAC1218s will be plenty for this cam:
