First thing I would try is to dremel two or three slits up a good bolt. Start from the end and make the cuts through the threads and go 5-10 threads up the bolt. Lube it up and run it in and out of the crank, cleaning the cut flutes out each time. It will act as a makeshift tap, and restore the threads if they can be saved.
How did the threads get wrecked, did you stick the bolt of the 3 jaw puller in the snout hole ?
You can try to buy a 16mm x 2.0 tap and clean the threads but there is a very good chance the threads are damaged beyond retapping.

Probably used the bolt head to push on. I know I do when I remove the pulleys but I also have an extended bolt I made to ensure the threads stay fully engaged during the process.
It sounds like you turned the bolt out to far to push on it with the puller and you wrecked the first few threads.
A regular tap will probably work as it's tapered and should find it's way into the original threads.
Go slow, back it out often and use plenty of oil.

I followed the instructions on ls1howto.com and used the stock bolt to push against to remove the balancer. I did some searching and found the tap for the crank is m16x2.0. I found a few on ebay and hopefully I can find some in my local stores later today....the tap should work correct?

I really wish they would take down that web site. Don't use ls1howto for re-installation or you will have bigger problems. Make or buy the correct tool to install the pulley once the threads are fixed.
