Default head flow and cam duration disscusion

I was just curious about how these two parameters come into play with each other. If the duration of a cam is 224 for instance with a lift of .563 and your head flows 240 exhaust at that lift how many cfms are you moving? In other words how much exhaust is allowed to escape before the intake valve opens? I know that most cams have a significant amount of overlap but is it possible to allow too much air to move on the exhaust or intake side of a cam? Also which is more important heads that flow more on average on the exhaust side or the intake side?

the heads make a HUGE difference. if you know the flow rates of your heads, that would be a great place to start deciding on a cam. if you have your best flow rates at say, .520 lift, you would not gain anything by going to something like a .570 cam. there is too much involved in these decisions to post here. if you can get your hands on a copy of dyno 2000, it will give you a fairly accurate estimate of hp/tq if you input all the parameters of your motor. also, all cams have some overlap but some more than others, it is dependant on the lsa and lift of the cam. if yo really want a serious explanation, go to www.newcovenant.com/speedcrafter/tech/camshaft/6.htm that will keep you busy for awhile.
