Default Heads/Cam Combo

I have a chance to pick up a used set of Heads & Cam

The heads are MMS Stage II. He is also selling a MMS 218 V1.1 LS1/LS6 (218 .561" 114LS)

I was already planning on picking up a TR 224/224 .561/.561 114 LSA .

But which cam should I install considering my current mods and the heads I am getting. I want to keep it smog legal. If I do headers they will also be smog legal.

You may be able to pass the emissions with the long tube headers as long as you get catalytic converters too. Technically it is illegal to move the cats from their original position; therefore, any long tube header would fail but that depends on how strict your local facility is. I would call MMS and Thunder and ask them about the cams. I personally would be hesitant to buy a used cam. I know the MTI T1 and B1 cams have been known to pass. Each state has different limits for emissions standards. Check to see if their are any ls1tech members from your state that have either cam to see if they passed or not. I do believe I have read posts about the B1 cam passing in CA though.

My main concern is the best cam for the heads considering my mods.

Most everyone posted that a used cam would be ok.

I am getting a good deal on them so I can't pass it up <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Ed, the lift on the cams are both the same, so you won't see any CFM different with either of the cams as far as the heads are concerned. You will deinfitely make more power with TR 224 though (10-20rwhp I'm guessing), as far as it being smog legal here it would say the 224 will be ok if you have shortie headers and cats. Good luck. ~Tony

Thanks Tony, sounds like the TR 224 is the way to go. I will just sell the 218.

Found out that one of the reasons that the guy is getting rid of his car and selling the heads is he broke a spring, dropped a valve.
The valve seat and guide are damaged. The shop where the car is at says it is repairable.

Do I have anything to worry about??

I had a similar problem where I broke a spring and dropped a valve. It cost me about $300 to fix (1.5 years ago).
