853 heads. Will these gaskets work?
I believe that I may have been given the wrong gaskets and these may not seal correctly. I have a '99 LS1 with 853 heads. Will these gaskets work, or should I just get the standard GM gaskets?
The shop gave me these gaskets: Fel-Pro 26190PT

Can anyone tell me why the MLS gaskets can't be used with earlier heads?
I could exchange them (a little bit of a hassle) for another model Fel-pro or GM gasket. Will the gaskets above work as good as another model # gasket, such as the ones listed above? 9284PT

See attachment. The early 862 truck heads have the same issue.

The MLS gaskets typically do not work with notched heads. They tend to leak at the notch - to the point that water just runs out.
The fel-pro permatorque 1161 has a relief in the gasket that matches the notch in the head, and those are head-specific. You absolutely cannot mix the L and R gaskets. They enabled me to run a 0.041" MLS on a notched head.
Now, the disclaimer. Mine have been in for ~200 miles, and I copper-coated them at installation. Not leaking, engine cooling very nicely - running 185 in Phoenix in August (110+ outside), making very good power.
Now, a million people could come on after me and say it didn't work for them or tell me to wait a few thousand miles and be completely correct. To me, it seems that if your gaskets have the relief for the notch, they should work. If they do not have the relief, then I am positive they will leak, because the gasket won't compress properly at the notch.
So, your choice is - risk it, and you can either gloat that you were right or describe what it is like to tear out your freshly installed gaskets - or don't, and then tell eveyone to get the carbon gaskets.
You'll get mixed responses on this.
