Question 853 Heads - what to do?

I bought what was *supposed* to be a set of 6K mile 862s to send off for porting or play with for $170. My only LS is a stock bottom end LM7. The seller accidentally sent me a set of 12K mile 853s. They are in super nice shape and came from a company that is selling a bunch of takeoffs that they never sold form the last decade. If they didn't have some carbon in the chambers I would swear these were never even installed.

What are these worth and what should I do? Should I just send these back and get the 862s I was promised, or is there some future in working out a partial refund and keeping these heads? I do plan to end up with a LQ4 bottom end within a year, but realistically the (by then ported) 862s would still be good for that setup.

I appreciate the help.

Thanks!

Right, but I would be better off starting with 862s for porting for a 5.3. Still need to know what the 853s are worth on the street($-wise), if anything.

Thanks.

I'd send to AI or Frankenstein Racing. Both will weld up the chambers and port. So you can get whatever compression you want.

Ok. I called Frankenstein and they are going to give me a cost analysis between the 862s needing the larger 2" valve and the 853 needing a much smaller chamber.

Sooooo one more time HOW MUCH is a very nice, low mile set of stock 853s worth, if anything?

Thanks!

Practically nothing maybe 100 if your lucky. The 862s are a better head for your build because they already have a smaller chamber and a valve job is all that is needed to put a 2.0 valve in that head.

Send back the 853's and get the 862 heads and have those ported. You'll want the smaller chamber for an LQ4. As far as cost, the only difference should be the cost of welding versus the cost of new intake valves. There really isn't anymore work to a valvejob between the 862 and 853 heads for a 2.0-2.02" valve.

Got it. Will contact seller today. Hopefully he will cover the return shipping!

I was out of car motors(32V DOHC V8 ala Cobra will make you think twice before even thinking about cam(S) swap @ $800) and into 4 wheelers for the last 8 years and just switched back and what a crazy new world this has become for me.. Factory aluminum heads with 500HP(ported) potential lying around everywhere almost free. Blows my mind a bit. And that's just the earlier/ LS1 heads. Very cool though!

Thanks for the advice. Just needed to make sure I didn't have something that was worth something more than what I paid for.
