Default Refreshing used motor

I know this question has probably been asked to death in one form or another, but my searches always turned up the basis of upgrading the cams or doing other various upgrade bits which I'm not wanting to do.

The motor I'm getting has 160k, the previous owner says it had good oil pressure when it ran but that it has sat for about 6 months. Going on that basis, what would be best to check outside of the standard condition of hoses, plugs, oil, pulling the oil pan and looking for any metal shavings. I want to do a compression test as well, but it's going to be a motor swap and the motor realistically won't be up and able to be started for at least a few weeks, but more than likely a month or so.

I'd like to do the most standard maintenance while the motor is out and I can have it on an engine stand.

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Some guys are having good luck with buying a drill-powered fluid pump for cheap from Harbor Freight. They use it to prime/pre-lube the oiling system through the cooler port above the oil filter. Gets the oil where the pump normally puts it. Then you could pull the plugs and turn over by hand a few times while doing that and should get some oil in the right places for you. I am going to do the same thing on the LS2 I am swapping in. Low miles but been sitting a long time.

Was the motor in a particularly harsh environment? 6 months of sitting isn't great for a motor but it happens all the time and they crank right up. My project is already delayed constantly with no real completion timeline(personal stuff) so I'm planning to prime it anyway so I can take my time...and I kinda want to get that procedure down for when I later build one.

Thank you for the information, greatly appreciated. My general procedure is to remove the spark plugs and do a dry run of cranking the car, but I'll see about this vs that method.

As for the environment, it's been sitting in an engine bay, presumably sitting outside, in Georgia. The weather is pretty variable, but I wouldn't say "harsh."

Are you planning on doing new rings and bearings?

With that mileage, I would consider a rebuild no matter what. It's relatively cheap insurance, especially if you want this to last. Not that at 160k the engine is dead, but it's a good idea to do since you have the engine out already.

New rings, bearings, timing chain, oil pump, seals, headgaskets, bolts, springs, pushrods are all a good thing to do. If this is a basic setup that will ensure another 160k of life.

I was not explicitly planning on it. Would it be a good idea to go ahead and change those out? And with changing the rings, should I also change the pistons for another set of stock pistons, or would reusing my current pistons be fine (assuming that they are not damaged)

Any place you recommend to go ahead and grab all of that as a package (if one exists) or just a recommended place to piece it together? Not needing any performance parts or anything, as mentioned, just wanting to refresh it to stock levels.
