Default Low mileage LS1 visibly burning oil!

Hey guys, I understand it's normal for LS1's to burn some oil, but I can literally see my car put out big puffs of blue smoke under hard acceleration.

Definitely doesn't do this each time I get on the throttle, but I've seen it quite a few times before. Not sure what to think of this. Always have to add oil to it in between oil changes too, this engine has only a tick over 24k miles on it as well if that helps.

No internal mods either, just has full bolt-on's and a dyno tune.

This sound like something to be concerned about?

Thanks for any help.

You could pull the throttle body and see if there is any oil in the intake, I don't know if it's your problem but I do see lots of threads with PCV system putting oil in the intake if you're not running a catch can.

+1 LS engines get real oily from the PCV. IMO, catch can is mandatory.

Yup... They all burn a little oil, even GM admits it.

Yeah I called the guy who tuned my car today and he basically said the same thing as you all, I need to go ahead and get a catch can. Figured I would ask on here first though because I was worried it's consumption was excessive, thanks a lot guys

For what it is worth, when I changed my PCV it reduced my oil consumption to almost zero. My car has 67k miles.

^^Interesting, I will have to look into that versus just installing a catch can, car is a garage queen so adding oil every now and then isn't a big deal but if I can stop the consumption completely that would be great

I purchased this car back in March 14 with 64.5k miles. Changed the oil right away, drove the car about 1k miles and the low oil light came on. It freaked me out and I thought I had a major problem. Then I read many threads about the PCV and oil consumption on these engines.

A new PCV was installed and the engine only used a half quart over the next 2k miles. Another GM known fact that will cause high oil consumption is a high RPM, low load condition. Put another way, if you are in first gear at 4000RPMs and not increasing speed, towing something or going up a hill, you will consume more oil. I do believe this was corrected on the 2001 model.

Just drive it, all 6 of mine burned oil so relax. I just added every 2k and enjoyed the car. Screw the catch can etc unless you like complicating your life more..................

If you keep adding oil often enough, you won't have to perform oil changes. LOL

even if it doesnt hurt anything i dont like my engine using oil. it gets in the intake and head ports and can cause spark knock if its gets bad enough. just do a good catch can with the new style pcv and it will be fine.

I didn't have any acute issues that I felt the catch can fixed but having a half quart of oil rolling around in my intake and a thick coating of sludge in the intake ports(head too) and on the intake valves I figured wasn't the best thing. I can tell you there is at least a 2mm layer of funk on the floor of the intake ports of the 862s I just took off of my 5.3. It ran fine but I have to assume that I was a little bit down on power because the port is actually smaller than when new. Also I doubt that oil in the combustion chamber falls under the category of "optimal." I guess my compression ratio probably goes up a tad every 20K miles though from the buildup!

...and Redbird beat me by 30 seconds. That's what I get for being long-winded.

And if you never put oil in, there's nothing to change..real money saver.

My 2007 6.0 doesn't burn or leak oil.
It only has 291, 546 miles on it though. Could this be because it doesn't use the same PCV system?
