Default ls6 Cam

What is a decent price to pay for an ls6 cam? They're going on eBay for around $200...That seems pretty steep to me

Yep. Even then, I don't think I'd use it. Cam profiles today are so far advanced compared to 5-10 years ago. Tick or BTR Stg 1 cams are phenomenal for a basic light duty DD.

It is...I think I paid 90 bucks for the last one I bought...

That being said...I don't think it gets enough credit when building on a super tight budget.

I built a super budget 5.3L for my 1972 Chevelle wagon.

I would have liked to use a "custom" $350-$400 dollar cam...Morel lifters...a nice set of BTR springs...(and I will somday when I decide to go "big") but that's not very budget friendly in my book. I used an LS6/Z06 cam...55 dollar "blue valve springs...LS7 lifters...

This thing is a barrel of fun...knocks down over 23 MPG and idles like a stock Corvette...

(Which I think with that cam made 405 HP stock.)

Default LS6 Cam

They usually go for 125-200. Good cam for mild build. Ill buy everyone you can find for $90.00. They actually will lose a lil bit down low vs stock cam but will rev up past 6500 easily with correct springs so work alot better than stock and they love Nitrous. Ive done it and know.
That cam is hardly noticeable in exhaust sound and will get great fuel economy.

Stock crate '04 LS6 longblock here, which of course means LS6 cam & heads. I put down 400.1 RWHP with it and all the basic bolt-ons (shorty headers too I might add)...not too shabby IMO...

Near LS1 idle quality, pulls hard all the way to 6600 RPM, and no one has a clue from its sound...I'm a fan of the LS6 cam...

I liked my ls6 cam, made 400rwhp through a 10 bolt. It did everything well, and got great gas mileage, destroyed a couple bolt on coyotes. For a budget it's great.

Not trying to talk you out of it as the LS6 cam is a proven performer but as some have mentioned it does sacrifice a bit of low end even in the 346 incher. FWIW that magazine test recently found the best upgrade GM cam for the 325 incher is the 02-04 LS1 cam. It lost nothing as far as torque @ 2500 and only continued to gain as the rpms went to 6500. Proper valves springs and pushrods assumed.

It is lazy down low, I had 3.42's out back and it definitely liked RPM's. C5z's come with 243's and m12 t56's and only weigh 3000 pounds so it's different for them. But my stock 2000 cam does just fine right now. Plus you can find them dirt cheap, if not free in the pay it forward thread.

I had one many years ago in a 2000 Trans Am.I saw some good gains with it,got it for like $100.00,upgraded to the yellow ZO6 valve springs. It worked very well, for what I needed at the time.Gas was about $4.00 a gallon then, too.

10:19 to one compression 346 inch with supporting mods, gears, etc. = a good choice
9.5 to one 325 inch = there are better options

Stop injecting common sense and a chance for this guy to save another buck as the LS1 cam is surely cheaper.

You should try and tell us how great it worked in your 408 with rectangle port heads that way you make sure to really compare apples to oranges.

He definitely needs the .700 lift Manley doubles because of the ramp rate, that much we do know.

Have it reground on 112 LSA then it will have a strong midrange. Katech did the same with their original torquer cam.

Hot Rod did a test years ago with both the 01 and 02+ LS6 camshafts reground on tighter LSAs and they both made strong midrange.
