Default 317 heads, is valve lapping ok to do?

My heads are off getting all the carbon and dirt cleaned out of them. I've been looking at videos of lapping the valves to seat them. It it ok to do or should I let the shop seat the valves?

What car, what combo ?? Are they the correct head for you or have you already been running them ??
If you have no money then lapping the valves is a great idea, if you can afford it a speed shop valve job is much better and will gain flow if done properly.

Well it my SS in my signature. Ls1 block and standard Pistons. I am going to boost the car so I am downgrading from my current PRC 2.5 heads to the 317's. I can have a shop do it but I didn't know if doing it yourself was just as good.

I always hand lap the valves. I'm not sure it does any good, but it makes me happy. It also gives you a good visual indication that there's are no bent valves or damaged seats.

It's pretty easy to do, no real magic to it.
