Default header bolt hole into water jacket

I have a 799 head. The header bolt hole was repaired with a helicoil. However the repair went through the head into the water jacket. Can this be repaired or am I out a head? Putting a flashlight to it you can see it goes right throught and I sprayed some WD40 the bolt hole and sure enough it comes out of the water jacket.

Is the head on the car now or still off? How big is the hole into the head, full diameter or just the tip of the drill? Tough to seal a heli-coil completely.

Generous use of RTV is worth a shot. Don't think you will seal the threads but you might seal under the head of the bolt.

How deep are the threads? You may be able to get a threaded plug and install deep in the hole that still allows room for a bolt behind it.

I took the head off to get a better look. The hole is the full diameter. This is a classic measure twice lesson. I thought I surely I had room to spare.
After a night of searching on the the internet for a fix I found that this is common and most just use a thread sealer. But with the helicoil in there I am not sure it would seal. I wonder if I should just redrill for a 10 mm thread, epoxy with JB weld or something similar. The tap without using a helical. Then just seal the threads real good.

I like that idea but I would use a high temp thread sealer not jb weld. You want to be able to remove the bolt in the future.

If you think you can go up a bolt size I do think that would be easier to seal than the helicoil, that is the hard part to seal, threads into water is easy, remember a lot of engines the head bolts are wet.

Many heads have intake bolt holes that open to ports especially after porting and with helicoil those seal with some thread sealant but they aren't pressurized like he waterjacket.

Clean it, put sealer in it, and be done.

BB mopars have the exhaust stud holes as thru holes into the water jacket. It's no biggie.

I'd use some permatex 81878 copper rtv and call it a day.

Actually I'd probably use a stud on that one hole so I didn't have to drain the radiator every time I wanted to mess with the headers.

Sealing threads is easy, sealing a helicoil is harder.

I drilled into the water jacket once when trying to remove a broken exhaust bolt with an ease out bit. After getting the bolt out, I just used some rtv to seal it up. It worked fine for several thousand miles with no issues at all. I later did a cam swap and removed the heads to p&p them and have a vj done. Since the bolt hole was on the very end of the head the shop removed the freeze plug and welded the hole from the back side through the water jacket.

I took the helicoil out, rethreaded the hole and will use a stud with red locktite.

I would use thread sealer instead of red locktite
