Take a sharpie or some layout ink and paint the combustion chambers. Set the heads on your block and take a scribe and scribe the bore on the chamber. That scribe line is where you need to be next to the valves.

How would you do this evenly on each chamber on the head?

Once you scribe the bore line, it's like coloring. Stay inside the lines.

Wouldn't it be hard to keep them all the same depth etc etc doing it by hand? Wouldn't this cause difference in compression (obviously small)

Well there is going to be some variation but it's very minimal. Just have to get the feel for it. It takes practice like anything else.

Here are some ford heads that I'm finishing up. Snapped a few pics after I started working on the chambers. I already chambered them, but had to blend the valve job into the chamber.

Cylinder head on the block, scribed the bore. You could also use your head gasket to do this, but use the dowel pins to align the gasket beforehand.

Before you start any chamber work, you need a couple of old valves to sacrifice that way you won't grind into your valve job. You want to take them and grind the face down until you don't have any margin left on the valve... like a pizza cutter, that way you can get your grinder in tight next to the seat. I do mine in a lathe, but you could put the valves in a drill and use a bench grinder or angle grinder.

Here you can see the edge between the valve seat and chamber that needs blending after the valve job. I already started blending them some before I took this

Looks good. You blended the seat to the bowl and the seat to the chamber, removed the swirl step and reduce the valve guide boss size and shape. it should show some real good improvements. A good multi angle or Serdi cut valve job will be the finishing touch.

Are these the Ford GT40 heads ? The chambers look very much like LS heads. Thank you for posting these informative pictures, very clean work.

They look like 862 or 799 heads (or there equivelent) found on most of the 5.3L GM truck engines. I have a 4 sets of these in my garage I get them very cheap from my local scrap yard so I used a couple sets to practice porting and polishing before I do a set 243's for my car.

There are 5 angles on the intake seats. The top cut is what I blended into the chamber, bottom cut is blended into the bowl.

They are airflow research heads. The valves are swapped in the chamber from what an LS head is.
