Default Temp o-ring fix

01 WS6 After setting this winter the oring on the pickup tube shrank and was letting air into the oil stream. Lifters clacking terrible, plus I had air mixed in the oil when I checked the dip stick. So I got this idea to put a product for automatic transmissions called TransX http://www.zoro.com/i/G2284511/?utm_...FUkR7AodJBwACA in the engine oil. I only put 1-2 ozs in at very most just too see if it would help.

Engine is quiet as a mouse now and oil pressure went up 10psi from 35 idle to 45 idling. Guess it worked, we'll see how long it lasts.
I tried this once before in my 02 formula and it worked good but the Formula wasn't leaking air as bad.

Don't over do it......I put about 1 1/2 ozs in with a fresh oil change. I drove it about 50 miles, didn't notice any change. Car sat for a few days, I started it and noticed 2 things the oil pressure was a bit higher 5-10 psi hot and cold and the lifters were quiet. I drove it 3 different times since then and it stayed quiet and oil pressure stays up, I added 1 oz more to be sure it stays quiet. So that's about 2 1/2 ozs total, Walmart has it for around 5 bucks. Before I put the Transx in hot idle was 35 nows its 40-45 and cold start was 50-55 now its 60-65. Also the lifter tapping and ticking is gone FINALLY. I owned this car for 3 years and its tapped and rattled the entire time.

I know it sounds stupid but I just plain forgot about using the TransX in the Formula 5 years ago. That had the same troubles plus the oil pressure gauge would dance around. I put about 3 ozs in it one time shortly after I bought it with 28k on the clock, was still quiet @ 119k when my wife broke a utility pole in half totaling the car. <not a scatch on her, pole smashed the t top out drivers side and never touched her!

So it does work but just don't over do it, use 1 to 3 ozs total. I know of a few people that put the entire 15 oz bottle in their engines without any trouble but that's way overkill!.

I also use this stuff in all my floor jacks and all my power steering systems. In power steering I add 1-3 ozs. My jeep has 250k on it and the steering was starting to leak at about 180k, I put about 3 ozs in it and it hasn't leaked since. It a great product if you use it wisely. What I like about it is its not thick like lucas or bars leak etc.

I'd like for someone with a 200-250k mile truck or car that's starting to get lifter tap and low oil pressure to try it and post up their results. It won't help you if the oring is ripped or broken, but if its just old and wore it will!

Thank you for posting this. My lifters have been noisy since I swapped my cam. I assumed it was the higher ramp rates making more noise. XER lobes. I added 3 oz transX on my way home from work, and it is far quieter

Not quiet as a mouse, but 80% improvement. Thanks again. These types of things are why I love this site

Glad I could help, I just can't see pulling everything apart just to change a oring that was designed to fail. The engineers know a basic oring can not survive in that environment for long. Plus the heating and cooling cycling that oring has to endure. Honestly they should have used a metal to metal design of designed a much better seal package. 1st time I seen that oring in the oil circuit I laughed because its the ultimate in failure designs. It starts degrading as soon as its installed!
I was hoping by now someone would come up with a real deal seal fix to replace this but no one seems to understand the amount of BS this oring causes. Its insane..........another thing no one considers is the present design with only one fastener allows the pickup tube to be constantly moving around causing even more wear to the oring....insanity!

Volvo has a similar design that is a nightmare.

I gotta tell ya the rest of this story....... I had this car to 3 different dealer AND NOT ONE MENTIONED THE ORING! 1 st said piston slap....normal 2 nd said bad lifters.......3rd said piston slap.

And the real culprit is a 50 cent oring...can you imagine all the wrong work and BS this oring has caused over the years? Its beyond sanity!

so it's either a 50 cent o-ring or a $50MM o-ring...

The o-ring might be cheap but it can be a pain in the a$$ to install.

Every dealer I mentioned the oring to acted like it didn't exist! I told dealer I bought it from the oring was most likely causing all this lifter noise. They refused to change it and said it was piston slap. When I talked with the mechanic who was checking it out about the oring he looked puzzled. I hate dealer service depts.
