Default Exhaust valve pitting... *pics*

Going through a set of heads I recently bought, I noticed some pitting on the exhaust valves. They're fairly low mileage heads and the one pictured is the worst one, which also had visible rust on the face of the valve and the seat area. The actual valve seats themselves are fine and have no pitting. Ive heard this is pretty normal but Im just not sure... Im probably going to send these off for a valve job but wasn't quite planning on it.

First pic is cleaned and no lapping, second pic is after a bit more cleaning and some lapping compound.

Mine were like that on my Silverado with iron 873 heads. I took some time and did a couple rounds of Lapping and it took most of it out. And they were MUCH worse than yours. Apparently the pitting is pretty normal. Exhaust valves get beat up. Take your time, it's not going to happen instantly.

This...get those valves ground...all the lapping in the world isn't going to take the pits out. And, they will be perfectly concentric to the stem and guide after being ground...

This is the first time I've ever really seen anything like this before. Granted I haven't had a ton of heads apart before but I've done my fair share.

Local machine shop quoted $325 for a valve job and surfacing. But if I'm doing all that I may as well just port them a bit before hand but that's opening up a whole other can of worms. Ugh.

That's typically the norm for price, just paid $320 for a set of 243 heads, cleaning, pressure checking, decking, and recut all the valves and removed a broken bolt. Local NAPA machine shop was insane, quoted me $800 dollars, and then got mad at me when I came and took the heads back and told him absolutely not over the phone. lol
