Hello I,m new on forum im from colombia and I'm new with the LS Engines
i want help to identify this engine,I hope some of you can help, and im want convert this EFI engine to carburated, u can say me the type of ignition controller to use and type of reluctor wheel 24x or 58x
This is a 5.3 out of a Trailblazer, the Drive by wire and tall power steering neck gave it away. If you can get a close up of the left rear of the engine block near the cylinder head there should a vin laser etched on it. I'm thinking it's a earlier Pre 05 Gen III engine because it has 799 heads. The GEN IV's I believe came with 243's in the trailblazer along with DOD.

Beat me too it, it looks like an Gen IV 5.3 from a gmt-360 truck (trailblazer, envoy, 9-7x, etc)
If theres a hole through the center of the oilpan for the front axle its a dead giveaway http://www.ls-guy.com/lh6/
799s are 243 heads, so this is a Gen IV from the heads and the fact it's aluminium block.
The earlier Gen IIIs had the "5.3" heads which I forget what casting they were but also had iron blocks.
ALL v8 360's vehicles (Trailblazers, Envoys etc) came with all aluminum engines. From 03-09 Obviously the LS2 trailblazer but all the 5.3's as well. These 5.3's were built for the 360 platform only and included the LM4 Gen III (03-04)and LH6 Gen IV (05-09). The 05 later V8 came with actual stamped 243 heads. I've owned 2 so I think I know what I'm talking about. If you have evidence to prove otherwise please post it.

The LM4s did not come with 799s either, they had 862s or 706s on them. And Ive seen newer (07+) silverados that had a 799 on 1 side and a 243 on the other

ok, but that's a Silverado. Trailblazers were packaged differently, that's the point I'm trying to make. I think the only other vehicle the LM4 came in was the SSR.
This from the SSR site "Chevy's new roadster is powered by an all-aluminum Vortec 5300 V-8." This is the LM4 and was never an Iron block nor was it offered in the Silverado. The package was made for the 360-370 platform (SSR,Trailblazer etc)

Understood, what I was saying was that GM used the 799/243 heads interchangeably (because they are), so its not out the question that a LH6 could have had 799s from the factory.

I know its not an iron block, I have one sitting in my garage on an engine stand right now that I just pulled out of an '04 Buick Rainier last weekend.

Yes, but all the LH6's I have seen came with the 243 heads. Now is it possible that they ran low on 243's and threw some 799's in on some vehicles, maybe. Your Rainer was an 04 right? So which heads came on that engine?

Do you have a picture for reference? There isn't a lot of info on these engines so I just go by what I see. If you say it has 862's I believe you, but it would be nice to have an actual reference. Also, could you take a picture of the Left rear of the block just below the cylinder head? The Vin should be etched on the block to confirm it.

Ill try to get out there tonite, but may have to wait till tomorrow.
Also trying to get a hold of my brother to see what heads are on his truck cause he just bought a 09 9-7x w/ 5.3 2 weeks ago
As far as I know the 799 heads didnt come out until '05, when they started on the L33's.

The only reason I thought the 799's came on the early ones is the only V8 trailblazer I saw in the local junkyard was labeled an 04 but had those heads on it. Now it may have actually been a 05 model year or even had another motor put in it. I never pulled it since the front end was smashed up too bad.
I reference the 243's from the old 06 I used to drive. That is what I based my post on. Now obviously I am mistaken because there seems to be a couple different heads floating around on them. I learn something new everyday.
