Default What oil pump and timing chain?

I am 99% sure my oil pump o ring has deteriorated. I have a tick that comes and goes. I have installed hardened push rods, done the trunion bearing up grade, and new ls6 springs. My cars engine is stock with bolt ons. What oil pump and timing chain would you recommend? I have read about adding trans- x to swell the o ring, but I think it will only prolong the inevitable.

Do you think I need to replace the cam and crank sprockets as well? The car has 80,000 on it.

while your in there you might as well. i mean yes. ls2 chain and melling is a good pump. I have read that the high volume will suck your sump dry and I have read that high pressure will ruin your bearings. I have also read that the stock oil pump sucks and will fail. yet no one will say what pump to have. but go with the ported ls6 pump.

Cloyes with the C5R Chain and a Melling 10296 HV pump...

That's pretty much the best you can do without going to some really high dollar oil pumps.

Yea, I'm leaning towards the ls6 blueptinted and ported one from tick. And the ls2 timing set from TSP. What type of rtv do you recomend for the bottom of the cover?

Ultra black, it's oil resistant and will dry hard

I used a stock LS6 pump when I did my cam change. pressure went up 8-10psi over factory pump (60k miles). this and a LS2 chain should be all you will need.

I read Jake Fusion say once he liked the Hubbard Racing pumps. I'm on a tight budget so I'm thinking of getting their remanufactured ported LS6 oil pump. $85 and if you google and find it's page, you'll read that they do alot to make it as good as they can like stronger spring to raise the pressure a bit.
For a chain, I went with the ProGear set, around $100. A step up from the LS2 chain. If you do go with the LS2 and find it has slack when you install it, you can get the trick flow chain damper adapter that would take up some of the slack. Might make your chain last longer too.

Are the ls2 chains known for being a little loose?

On stock gears, yes. Now if you buy the Cloyes set, not the one Jake Fusion mentioned with the C5R chain but the entry level set that uses the LS2 chain, it is not loose.

Honestly I think alot of the popular parts are overkill. It's going to be a 400 crank hp engine in a street car, not an IMSA endurance engine.

A run of the mill quality part will work fine. An off the shelf Cloyes hex adjust timing chain kit adds complexity but is a quality part. An OEM LS2 chain works great as well.

A LS6 oil pump with supplied with o-rings is better than the OEM LS1 pump by default. Spending 30 minutes porting the intake side with a dremel tool and the DIY instructions on this website and it will be better by default so long as you don't ruin the oring sealing surface. Add some washers to the bypass spring per the same DIY instructions and your oil pressure will be higher. An off the shelf high pressure Melling is nice but also more expensive than a DIY port LS6.

Thanks for all your help, I installed everything on Sat and it went very well. The stock timing chain was pretty loose and the oil pump o-ring was squared off on the outside. The engine is super quiet now.

LS2 chain here with stock oil pump. My oil pressure at idle and WOT is terrific. Pretty sure my builder completed some "tricks" to my oil pump.
