Default Cylinder Head questions

Hey everyone,

My name is Kyle and I had a question about picking some heads for my 99 SS Camaro. As usual I am several years behind the curve for wanting to do stuff. So I was originally looking at doing a full exhaust, then looked at adding a mild cam, now im looking at doing heads as well. I am unlucky as i got the crap 8** heads. I really want to find a pair of 243 heads that are good to go, but it seems like those around are pricey. Ive tried to read up on the 241 heads and 799 heads, but I am at a loss. Im trying to keep to a budget and keep the engine looking stock without fancy metal showing from some big name cnc manufactured company.

Are 243 heads from a GTO worth getting? I know the sodium filled stems? and what not suggest they dissipate heat faster, the springs have higher lift, etc. (hope I didnt understand that wrong).

How do 241 and 799 heads stack up?

Should I buy perhaps stripped down gm heads and just upgrade the hardware?

Also I had found these on eBay, but it mentions slight pitting in one of the cylinders. Unfortunately I dont know if this is worth it or just asking for trouble?Any thoughts

Does anyone know where someone newer/ eager to want to do engine work for the first time can find a half way decent deal on any of them lol? Much appreciated.

Hey Kyle.

The 243 heads and the 799 heads are identical. Both are good options. The 241 is basically equal to 853.

I suggest looking through the ls1tech classifieds. You can find some good deals on 243/799 heads with the hardware already upgraded

The 243's are even used on the truck engines without the lightweight valves that were used in the LS6. I would be leery of buying off of ebay and would want either a trusted source or to see the heads first. You could try some of the forum vendors to see if they have a set since a lot of guys remove and go aftermarket. Also, I would lap the valves once you do get a set of heads.

If I do a cam like TR224 114LSA, I know I will have replace springs, would I still need to replace push rods/ rockers as well?

And lap the valves?

If you want to keep stock hardware call Kip at cam motion. He specializes in drop in cams and gets great results with them

imo any cam you put in you want new springs also. ether psi 1511, pac 1218, or BTR dual platinum kit. also shim the springs for the cam. you want to measure the install height and shim all the springs.

rockers wont need to be replaced but a trunnion upgrade is good thing to do.

push rods should be replaced AFTER MEASURING the correct length. stock rods may work but they tend to be weaker then the aftermarket ones so they have more of a chance of bending.

also valve lapping just watch this

That was a great post bobfig !
Scumaro, I bought my 243 heads from Ebay. I bought a pair of bare rebuildable heads for $350 and plan to take some things from the 241s I'm replacing. The heads were cleaned and pressure tested by the seller.
I have read that the 243 (and 799) heads are worth 10 to 20 hp by themselves over 241 heads. Maybe another 10 to 20 with the right valve job and a .020 to .030 mill. For gaskets, you could buy the SCE graphite ls1 gaskets for $60 that are .041 thick and save money over the $150 cometic gaskets. OEM head bolts from BTR are $50
Are 243 heads from a GTO worth getting? Sure I know the sodium filled stems? Only LS6 heads had these, hard to find and what not suggest they dissipate heat faster, the springs have higher lift 243 came with alot of different springs and none are as good as the ones bobfig mentioned, etc. (hope I didnt understand that wrong).

How do 241 and 799 heads stack up? Darth_V8r is right again

Should I buy perhaps stripped down gm heads and just upgrade the hardware? That's what I am doing

Sorry been running around all day, as far as what im looking to spend I am tryign to piece to gether everythign as fast as I can for as cheap as i can. I still need to order headers from texas speed as the are over $100 off right now for 1 7/8, I finally got a ls6 manifold so thats off the list, still need to order a cam, and the heads of course. I would like to stay under $2k if at all possible as I am buying a part here or there when I can while trying not to go broke.

I am talking to a guy right now from LS1tech about getting a set for $400, I wouldnt mind either to behonest, but im more inclined to do it myself. One of those I always wished I had done this stuff with my first car, but now I have some money I can afford to do it.
