02 WS6 Cam Help/Ideas?
Hey all, I'm in the process of -slowly- building up my car.
I currently have an SLP Lid, MGW Shifter, and a Flowmaster Catback.
I am going to be buying headers soon.
But in the meantime, I'd like to do some looking on cams.
I have looked around the forums but haven't seen quite what I want unless it's buried under years of posts.
Anywho.
My end goal with the car is to have a nice all N/A car. 500whp if possible.
But after headers I'd like to get a cam to sate my thirst for a more major power gain while I'm putting cash together for bigger things like heads, pistons, stroker, etc.
I've been looking at a couple Lingenfelter or Lunati cams.
But in all honesty, I have no idea -what- to look for in a cam.
I want something with GOOD streetability but still able to lay the power down when I want it.
Because -currently- it is my DD until I get my bike down to NM from MI (still need to find an affordable way to do that)
I was looking at a TSP 228R but I keep hearing that's not going to get the gains I want necessarily. I don't know how true that is but I'd like to expand my search and see what else I can find.
Let me know if you have anything in mind.

IMO, with you wanting a end goal of 500-600 rwhp in a N.A. motor you're going to want at least 400 cu.in. motor, an a larger cam(than the 228r) if you don't want to be swapping it. So I'd plan on starting with LS2 or LS3 block. Furthermore you might want to consider going forced induction since you'll probably spend just as much to meet you N.A end goal.

There's a thread in the stickies about hitting 500 NA worth looking at.
That said, Tony Mamo hit 490 on worked over 862's and a moderate cam in the 227 range. So if you start a build with his own heads as the foundation you'll have a good shot at it. He can spec you a cam to go with it. Have the cam ground by cam motion. You'll need 17/8 headers minimum and you'll want Tony to port out a fast 102 to go with the whole combo. That'll get you daily drive able 500 rear tire horsepower

As stated earlier just go F/I if you are wanting those power numbers. Also the cam is one of the last things that I would recommend do before you have all of the supporting mods: intake, headers, full exhaust (true duals maybe). Once you have that all set up I would move to getting a set of well designed heads. Even better, get a good head and cam combination that compliment each other. But, like I said, F/I is the only way to get near 600whp on the LS1.

Also, I already have the intake and exhaust, buying headers and cam together then going to start stuffing money aside for some heads.
Way down the road when the bird is no longer my DD then I may look into F/I but while it's my daily I don't feel like dealing with that.

Well, I know this much haha.
I didn't know exactly what kind of numbers I could get going all N/A til now so I made it a little vague.
Seems like I will be getting 500 on a good build so I'll make that my goal.

Regardless, everything I use to meet my end goal with N/A can very likely apply to a F/I application with the exception of changing a few core parts.
But the groundwork being stronger, forged etc etc, will still go along with a F/I build.

You will likely need to change the cam for FI, but everything else should only help the FI if/when you do it

I have done some ported OEM castings for a few folks here.....is that a result I wasn't privied to??
Are you confusing it with the Mamofied 215 AFR results?
Would love to see the thread discussing it if we hit that number with my ported 862 castings!

Are you confusing it with the Mamofied 215 AFR results?
Would love to see the thread discussing it if we hit that number with my ported 862 castings!

OP.....time to step up your game and look at my new line of cathedral heads. If it was a 4" bore motor I would go with my 235's......these heads and a mild cam on a 6.0 or larger could make close to the magic nickel mark.....definitely get there with an optimized set-up.....clear that number actually.
But....even leaving a few of the nickels and dimes on the table in an effort to save money I think we could get close with my new 235 heads but your not getting there with a ported OEM casting.....not to mention the potential is there for more when you have the coin to go after the nickel and dimes if you have the killer set of heads as your solid foundation (that's 3/4 of the battle right there)!!
