Default 020 over on ls1 block

I didnt find a recent thread on this. Has anybody actually put together a 020 over motor and did it live. The liners appear to be .125 thick, if only taking away .010 of material on either side of the bore, i would think its worth trying for a hand ported heads, LTs, and ls6 cam street motor.

I wouldn't do it, the block will basically be useless at that bore size. The reason you can't find recent threads about this is because most everybody agrees. If you need a hone to clean up the cylinder walls take it to 3.905 and call it a day.

So why are u saying the block is useless at that over bore exactly?
Like i said, the liner appears to be .125. Don't see why removing .010 per side would be a problem on a basically stock rebuild.

This comes from one of the best LSX machinist you'll ever come across:

For your info, the factory LS1 blocks have a gray iron liner that is only .075" thick. That is the reason why .010" over is the limit on the stock liners.

.012 over is possible as there are 3.910 pistons availlable, just saying.

those would be .010 over since you cant have a piston the same size as the bore....but going further tha that they make ls1 pistons in 4.125 bores. it doesnt mean they're going to fit in the block without sleeve work.

like said after .010 the liners become too thin and you chance them cracking. idk whats wrong with the op's block but i'd hate to have spent all that money for a rebuild, have the block potentially crack and have it all go down the tube. blocks are pretty cheap i wouldnt chancce it even if you "thought" it would work

We had to go to .020 on 7 and 8 to straighten the bore out. Lot of wear on the thrust side. I'm building the motor myself and only need pistons, rings, and bearings so i think I'm going to go for it. Thanks for the replys.

My roommate had his ls1 grenade on startup one winter and it was rebuilt by a shop that had only dealt with older engines. Needless to say it ended up with .020" pistons in it.

It's lived for several years and shows no signs of issues other than with the heads off you can see discoloration in the liners in some areas. It just transitions between light and dark gray in areas.

I wouldn't recommend it, but it doesn't mean instant failure...

No,that's not correct, they're listed as .012 over, 3.908 is .010 over, as a standard bore is 3.898. Pistons are listed for bore size not skirt dimension.
