They ok as long as nothing gets abused by detonation etc, but even a small amount of detonation will destroy these fragile rods and pistons quickly. I'll give you a hint, any rod that can be cracked is easily fractured. The pistons are glass like in composition. Ask the boat guys what happens to the stock rods out on the lake at full throttle after a few mins.

I just picked up a 98 LS1 car dirt cheap. My intentions are to "freshen up" the motor and sell.
This will include new bearings, rod & mains, Maybe cam bearings once I look at them. But usually not bad. New lifters (it's a given on LS's) & rings and deglaze the walls with a green scotch brite pad. I've seen LS engines with 400,000+ miles and still have nice cross-hatching. And of course new gaskets and seals, front to back, top to bottom.
The heads will also get cleaned up, possibly a full valve job with new bronze liners.
This will all turn a nice penny to some old guy looking for a LS1 to throw in his old hotrod.
