When shimming the oil pump for more PSI, where exactly does the shim go?

The shim goes in between the spring and the plug holding it all in. Basically you can put the shim in the plug and then put your spring in it and bolt in back in to the pump.

How big of shimms should you use? starting point? How much will the shimms raise the pressure on average?

Generally you can put up to a .125" shim in them. This will raise your pressure around 20psi. Sometimes idle psi is not effected that much.

You can use a washer or piece of shim stock for a shim. Should be able to that stuff at your local hardware store.
